(London, Ontario) – On Saturday afternoon in the Falcons season opener, the Falcons Women's Soccer team (1-0) defeated the Sheridan Bruins (0-1) by a score of 2-1.

Both teams battled defensively in the opening 45 minutes. Fanshawe accumulated 11 shots, while the visiting Bruins had seven. Despite the Falcons having chances, the game was scoreless at the half.

In the second frame, Fanshawe striker Nicole Nielsen (London, ON) found the rebound and scored after a Jade Kovacevic (Acton, ON) shot on goal. In the 77th minute, Nielsen recorded her second goal of the match to put the Falcons up 2-0. Sheridan would add a goal in the 82nd minute but it wouldn't be enough as the home team picked up the 2-1 victory. Fanshawe outshot the Bruins 26-11 in the match and had six corners to Sheridan's none. Falcons goalkeeper Breanne Carreiro (Strathroy, ON) had six saves.

Fanshawe will be on the road for their next match when they will face the Humber Hawks (0-1) in Vaughan on Wednesday, September 11. The game will involve the same two teams that met in last season's OCAA Gold medal match, won 3-2 in overtime by Fanshawe.
