OSHAWA, Ont. - In front of the home crowd at Thompson Rugby Park for the first time this season, the Durham College men's rugby team put on a show with a 62-12 dismantling of the visiting Fleming Knight on Saturday afternoon.
Primarily known for their strength on the interior and their defensive tackling, it was the Lords outside speed that shined on the day. Second-year wings
Robert Eliadis (Uxbridge, Ont.) and
Eddie Oliveira (Oshawa, Ont.) were untouchable once the ball was swung to them on the perimeter. Eliadis finished the afternoon with four tries, while Oliveira scored two tries and kicked five converts.
DC were quick out of the gates when Oliveira raced down the sideline untouched to score the opening try of the match.
Ty Jacob (Courtice, Ont.) made the convert to make the score 7-0 early. From there the combination of Oliveira on one side and speedster Robbie Eliadis on the other, plus the consistent interior scoring of
Daniel Cooper (Uxbridge, Ont.), saw Durham jump out to a 38-5 halftime lead.
Action was much the same following the break as Eliadis sprinted free for two second half tries, while Cooper added a third of his own, all while Oliveira continued to run for large gains to maintain the field advantage. Lords captain
Malcolm Hooper (Orangeville, Ont.) added a single score of his own to round out Durham's offensive output.
The offence flowed seamlessly through scrum half
Brock Dunn (Ashburn, Ont.) and fly half
Xavier Benjamin (Whitby, Ont.) as the pair delivered pass after pass to the Lords offensive weapons.
Defensively the Lords also saw strong performances from
Devon Parson (Caesarea, Ont.) and
Hayden Parkins (Oshawa, Ont.), along with a host of others as they stifled the Knights attack throughout the entirety of the match.
Fleming will surely be looking to avenge the loss as DC now heads to Peterborough to challenge the Knights on their turf on Sunday, Oct. 6. The match is scheduled to be streamed on
OCAA LIVE with kick-off set for 4 p.m.
