Lords with easy victory over Knights in final home game

OSHAWA, Ont. – It couldn't have been scripted much better.

The lone graduating senior for the Durham College women's volleyball team, Nicole Vandenheuvel (Whitby, Ont.), had the final of Thursday night's match as Durham walked away with an easy 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-8) victory over the Fleming Knights.

Durham's co-captain is known for her defensive play, but picked up a pair of kills in the match in her final regular season match at the CRWC. That said, the victory puts the Lords one step closer to hosting an OCAA championship qualifying match on February 17.

"It was nice to see a hometown girl play her final home game and have the opportunity to play every position she has played over her two years here and have success," said head coach Tony Clarke. "Nicole has been a leader on and off the court for us since joining the team last year and we're going to miss her next season."

Continuing her strong play in the second half of the season, Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.) finished with a match-high 16 points. That was highlighted by a career-high 13 kills and 16 points.

Cassidy Nicholson-Clarke (Ajax, Ont.) had a well-rounded performance as she finished with five kills, two aces and two blocks.

That was quarterbacked by Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) who finished with 28 assists.

Fleming's top player in the match was Danielle Prsa with six kills and two blocks.

Saturday the Lords travel to Belleville to face the first-place Loyalist Lancers. In their November 7 meeting, Durham fell 3-0. Their final match of the season will be Wednesday, Feb. 14 against the Seneca Sting.

In order for the Lords to host their OCAA qualifying match next Saturday, rather than travel, Durham needs the Seneca Sting to lose a match or earn one more victory.
