Women's volleyball conquers Grizzlies in annual Pots & Pans Game

OSHAWA, Ont. - Maintaining their undefeated record with their 14th consecutive win this season, the Durham College women's volleyball team topped the visiting Georgian Grizzlies in straight sets on Thursday night at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre. Set scores for the contest were 25-18, 25-12, 25-10.

The Lords made quick work of the Grizzlies in front of a noisy crowd for the annual pots and pans game, started with the theme of "making noise for mental health," defeating the road team in under 60 minutes. Georgian faced insurmountable odds, arriving to the mid-week matchup with just six active players on their roster, while also dealing with a deafening home crowd anytime a Grizzly player stepped to the service line.

Durham looked every part of the No. 1 seeded team in the OCAA east division, dominating net play with 12 blocks to just four from the Grizzlies, while also doubling up Georgian in kills, 30-14. Most impressive of all for the Lords was the involvement of a whole roster of talented players as six different Lords players recorded at least five points in the win.

Durham will look to continue their strong play this Saturday, Jan. 26, when they welcome the Centennial Colts to the CRWC for an afternoon showdown. First serve for the contest is scheduled for 1 p.m., with those in attendance having an opportunity to win a number of fantastic prizes courtesy of Sky Zone Trampoline Park Whitby, including a 365-day bounce pass.
    • Lords scoring leader Althea Boncheff (Alliston, Ont.) once again broke the double-digit points mark leading all players with a game-high 12 points from five kills, five aces and two blocks.
• Durham outside hitter Jessica Joensen (Pickering, Ont.) and middle Pasha Ormerod (Terrace, B.C.) excelled at picking apart the exhausted Grizzlies defence, as Joensen scored eight points off of four kills and four blocks, while Ormerod totaled seven points from five kills and two blocks.
• Domenica De Francesco led the Grizzlies attack with 26 total attempts, scoring nine kills and one ace for 10 points on the evening.
  • First-year setter Georgi Williams (Whitby, Ont.) and veteran Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) split time at the setter position in the quick three-set match, recording 15 and eight assists, respectively.
• The Lords were also exceptional across the entire court defensively as Boncheff notched a team-high seven digs, followed by six from Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont. and Hannah Amos (Whitby, Ont.) and five from libero Devyn Fraser (Uxbridge, Ont.).
• Facing a relentless Durham attack, Sophia Clement produced a game-high seven digs for Georgian, adding 13 assists from her setter position.
  Overall Record: 25-8
Conference Record: 14-0

Next game: Saturday, Jan. 26 vs. Centennial Colts • 1 p.m. – Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre
