ETOBICOKE – The Humber (3-1, 2nd OCAA) softball team began its six-game homestand Tuesday evening splitting the doubleheader with the Conestoga Condors (3-3, 3rd OCAA).
Humber's pitching staff was dominant all night, allowing two earned runs over 14 innings of work.
Game 1: Humber 0, Conestoga 3
After scoring 13 runs to begin the season, Humber's offence fell flat in front of the large home crowd, wasting a solid pitching performance from standout Presly Buchanan.
The Hawks had their leadoff hitter reach base in six-of-seven innings, but Humber could not find a timely hit to score a run.
Buchanan, making her home debut, went the distance allowing two earned runs, scattering five hits and recording four strikeouts. Lead-off walks hurt the hard-throwing righty and the Condors capitalized by scoring two of their runs after the lead-off hitter was issued a free pass.
Game 2: Humber 8, Conestoga 0
After being shut out at home for only the second time in the Duaine Bowles era, the Hawks did not wait to get on the board in game two. In the home-half of the first, Kate Kostuch roped an RBI double to score Meaghan Murphy, giving the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
Humber's offence continued to be stagnant until finally breaking through in the sixth inning. The Hawks sent 11 hitters to the dish, scoring six runs on five hits. Alexis Ferreira started the run, scorching a triple that scored Emma Woodrow from first base.
Second-year pitcher Meagan Muir continued her impressive start to the 2019 season, leaving the Conestoga hitters off-balance and inducing weak contact. The Brampton native went the distance to record her first complete-game shutout, losing her no-hit bid in the sixth inning.
