Panchan breaks Durham College single game scoring record

OSHAWA, Ont. – It was all Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre on Friday night.

The second year sport management student led the Durham College women's basketball team with 41 points in their 66-64 victory over the Algonquin Thunder, in the process breaking Durham College's record for most points in a single game.

Durham's record was previously held by Jenn Hevey at 38 points. She set the record in Barrie on Oct. 16, 1998 against Georgian College, when the Lords defeated the Grizzlies 75-26.

"I'm extremely happy to find out I broke the record here at Durham College, but we aren't even halfway through the season, so we're focusing on the next game for us against Centennial on Friday," said Panchan. "I'll take a little bit of time tomorrow to enjoy it, but Monday we're back in the gym preparing for our next game and that's where our focus is right now."

The loss was Algonquin's first of the season and only their fourth in the last seven years. Heading into tonight's game, Algonquin had won 17 straight games over Durham with the Lords last win coming on Jan. 12, 2007.

Panchan and Brittany Walters (Oshawa, Ont.) were the Lords lone scorers in the opening quarter as Algonquin was ahead 16-10 through one quarter.

The Thunder continued to press Durham in the second as they outscored Durham 18-17 to take a 34-27 lead into the halftime break.

In the third Panchan had 11 of Durham's 21 points as they took a 48-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Algonquin had a shot for the win in the dying seconds, but Durham would hold on for their 66-64 victory after Walters gave the Lords the lead in the final minute after making a pair of free throws to put them ahead 65-64.

Walters finished the game with 10 points, while Panchan also added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Amoney Abakar led the Thunder with 20 points, while Chiderah Obiahuba picked up 10 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Durham is now off for the remainder of the weekend as they prepare for their game against the Centennial Colts Friday night in Scarborough.
