Fanshawe Women’s Soccer Claims OCAA West Division Top Spot

(London, Ontario) – In their final regular season game, the Fanshawe Women's Soccer team (5-0-1, 1st in West) clinched the OCAA West Division title after a 3-0 win over St. Clair (4-1-1, 2nd in West). The victory extended their OCAA regular season unbeaten streak to 23 games.

In the battle for the best in the west, the teams exchanged shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. Fanshawe would get on the board first in the 28th minute when Aysia King (London, ON) scored her third goal of the season by dribbling through the St. Clair defense and placing the ball in the bottom left corner of the net. The Falcons continued to fly from there, gaining momentum with Madilyn Michienzi (London, ON) controlling the possession, resulting in more Fanshawe scoring opportunities. OCAA scoring leader, Kayla McQueen (London, ON) then made the score 2-0 on a penalty kick to make her tally 17 on the season. The red and white held a 7-3 shot attempt advantage at half time.

Despite the Saints outshooting the Falcons in the second half, Fanshawe keeper Breanne Carreiro (Strathroy, ON) made a couple of strong saves to hold St. Clair scoreless. King would score again in the 89th minute to secure the 3-0 victory. The total shots on goal in the game were 6-3 in favour of the Saints and shot attempts were tied 9-9.

By virtue of their first place finish, the Falcons will receive a bye in the opening round of the OCAA playoffs. Fanshawe will host a quarterfinal playoff match on Saturday, October 23 against the winner of 3rd in the Central division and 2nd in the East division.
