While the final scoreboard reads 0-3 in favor of the visiting Durham Lords, the George Brown Huskies women's volleyball team continued to show the promise that Head Coach Daphne Choi has seen in her squad day in and day out since the start of the pre-season.
"Although we didn't win the game, I was extremely proud of our team. Considering that Durham hasn't lost a regular season match in something like 24 matches, I was so proud of our effort", commented Choi post game. "We've come a long way and it's just further evidence of the hard work we're putting into developing a winning program."
Over the three sets, George Brown only lost by a total of 11 points, with competitive final set scores of 21-25, 22-25, 21-25. Without the services of 2018 OCAA All Rookie team member Beatriz Vilches (6'0) sidelined by injury, the Lords were able to capitalize on a slightly undersized Huskies front line at the net. Durham would finish the game with 33 kills on 82 total attacks. The Huskies would counter with 21 kills of their own, but it wasn't enough to get them over the hump against the #2 team in the province.
What George Brown lacks in size, they make up in speed and agility however, notably from rookie setter Yuna Miyake. "Repeatedly I keep hearing other coaches say, "avoid the Libero!", says Choi. "Yuna brings over her experience from Japan, where the style of play is more fluid and adjusts more easily to the fast play we saw from Durham." The Huskies collected 35 digs on the afternoon, 11 at the hands of Miyake.
Up next, George Brown takes to the road with the hopes of getting back into the win column when they visit Fleming College on Wednesday, November 13th to face the winless Knights (0-5). Scheduled start is 6pm.
