Sharp Shooting Leads Falcons to Victory over St. Clair

(London, Ontario) – The No. 5 CCAA ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (3-0) extended their OCAA win streak to 22 games on Wednesday evening in their home opener. The Falcons were victorious over the No. 8 St. Clair Saints (2-1) by a score of 84-65. The Fanshawe squad sported ONERUN warmup shirts to show support for those affected by cancer and in honour of those who have lost their battle.

In a rematch of last season's OCAA final, reigning OCAA Player of the Year Chuot Angou (London, ON) hit two deep triples to get the Falcons rolling. Fanshawe extended their lead to 23-11 after the first quarter on back-to-back layups from local products Natalie Warren and Sydney Kendellen. In the second frame, Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) continued the sharp shooting for Fanshawe, hitting a three-pointer of her own. Wright recently became the Fanshawe Women's Basketball career scoring leader, as her 842 points surpassed former teammate Ali Vlasman's (2013-2018) previous record of 831. A layup from rookie Taylor Hill (Ohsweken, ON) stretched the Falcons lead, then Angou hit her fifth triple of the half to go up 46-27. Heading into the locker room, the Birds were shooting an impressive 56% from behind the arc.

The Saints stepped up their game in the third quarter, erasing Fanshawe's 19-point lead by forcing turnovers and securing rebounds. The Falcons were able to regroup in the fourth frame when Wright found Angou for her seventh three-pointer of the game. Angou then found Mackenzie Van Dyk for a layup. A steal and layup from Hill would secure the game for the home squad, 84-65.

As a team, the Falcons set a new Fanshawe Women's Basketball record for most made threes in a game with 13. The Birds shot 40% from the field, 46% from long range and 85% from the charity stripe. Angou led all scorers with 25, while Kendellen notched 15 points and six assists. Warren recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Wright grabbed 10 boards and had a game-high seven assists.

Fanshawe will be back in action on Wednesday, November 6, when they will travel to Etobicoke to play the No. 14 nationally ranked Humber Hawks (2-0) at 6pm.
