Men's soccer opens new season with big win over Fleming

Box Score

OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College men's soccer team delivered in their first match of the 2021 OCAA season, defeating the Fleming Knights at Vaso's Field by a final score of 4-0 on Friday night.

The DC offence were quick to make their mark against a shorthanded Fleming squad when first-year midfielder Lleyton Williams (Oshawa, ON) found the back of the net in just the 4th minute of play. Following the opening goal, Durham continued to hold possession, but were unable to add another goal before the halftime break.

Taking full advantage of playing on home turf at Vaso's Field, the Lords went on a run of goals in the second half, scoring three more in just over ten minutes. First it was Skylar Grey (Ajax, ON) who potted DC's second goal of the match in the 71st minute, continuing his strong play from the preseason. Next was Trenden Mason (Oshawa, ON) who headed in from an Anthony Grozdanis (Scarborough, ON) corner kick flicked over by Grey in the 84th. The fourth and final goal of the match came courtesy veteran forward Nate Paine (Whitby, ON) who sped down the right wing to put a strong foot to the ball, which found the back left corner of the Knights net in the last minute of play.

Starting keeper for the Lords Garrett Werner (Ajax, ON) finished the night with five saves in a clean sheet effort. Fleming counterpart Devin Pinnock also tallied five saves on nine shots faced in goal for the Knights.

Durham will now hit the road as they travel to Kingston to challenge the St. Lawrence Surge next Friday, Sept. 24. Kick off for the road contest is scheduled for 8 p.m.
