Six unanswered goals lift Lords to victory

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. - The Durham Lords women's soccer team bounced back with an emphatic 6-1 win on Friday night against the Centennial Colts.

Heading into the break the score was 0-0, but action picked up quickly as just a minute into the second half, Centennial opened the scoring courtesy of Nailah Rowe who's shot tipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

The lead only lasted four minutes though as the Lords would go on a run for the remainder of the second half which saw them tally six unanswered goals.

"Centennial played us very tough in the first half and we easily could have been down by one or two if it was not for our keeper Kerrington Steed (Courtice, Ont.)," praised Lords head coach Alex Bianchi. "At half time the coaching staff stressed the importance of the adjustments that were need and the players went out, followed the instructions, and the game came to us. We could not have asked for a better second half from our players."

The string of Durham goals began when Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.) had a strike at goal and Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) got onto the rebound to level the game 1-1.

Durham took the lead 10 minutes later when veteran MacKenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.) raced onto a loose ball at the top of the box before sending a rifle of a shot into the bottom left corner.

Durham scored their third unanswered goal from a corner when Bailey Colangelo (Whitby, Ont.) tapped home from close range for her second goal in as many weeks.

DC's leading goal scorer this season Makayla Rudder (Scarborough, Ont.) then got in on the action making it four goals in six minutes for the Lords with her strike in the 66th minute.

Barry notched her second of the night in the 86th, as she produced an even better effort than her first when she curled one into the top right corner to make it 5-1 for the Lords.

The scoring was topped off in the 89th minute by rookie Carina Konstantinou (Hamilton, Ont.) who's long-range strike smashed into the top netting, marking her first career OCAA goal and a 6-1 Lords win.

The Lords are up to 15 points and fourth place in the OCAA east division, ranking just one point back of the St. Lawrence Vikings. Durham will be back in action on Friday. Oct. 11 in their home finale against the Fleming Knights at Vaso's Field with kickoff set for 6 p.m.

Overall Record: 6-6-0 (W-L-D)
