OTTAWA, Ont. - Leading for nearly the entirety of the game, the Durham College men's rugby team were upset in a nail-biting loss on Sunday afternoon in Ottawa, falling 26-25 to the Algonquin Thunder.
Durham opened the game with a quick try from
Jack DiRosa (Newmarket, Ont.) to make it a 5-0 DC lead early. DiRosa followed that up with his second of the match midway through the first half to double up the Thunder 10-0. Algonquin would get one back before the break with a successful convert to make it a 10-7 score line in favour of the Lords at the break.
In the second half tries from
Daniel Cooper (Uxbridge, Ont.) and
Ty Jacob (Courtice, Ont.), along with a successful convert from Jacob made it a 17-7 lead for DC. Back-and-forth action then took over with Algonquin scoring, followed by a penalty kick from Jacob, and a try from
Eddie Oliveira (Oshawa, Ont.) to make it 25-14 in favour of Durham with eight minutes remaining. However, two unanswered tries and a convert sealed the deal for the Thunder, knocking off the defending champion Lords in regular season action.
The Durham Lords will look to get back-on-track with a home-and-home with the Fleming Knights beginning with DC's home opener this Saturday, Sept. 28 at Thompson Rugby Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
