DC eliminated from OCAA championship with quarter-final loss

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Durham Lords men's soccer team was knocked out of the 2019 OCAA championship, hosted by Fleming College, when they were defeated 2-0 by the Sheridan Bruins in the provincial quarter-finals on Wednesday afternoon.

The opening chance of the game came in the 17th minute for Sheridan, but a nice save from Kevon Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) to the bottom left corner kept the score tied. Grant would be tested several times throughout the 90 minute match and proved to be one of the best players on the pitch with his performance.

Following the early opportunity for the Bruins neither side was able to create any other scoring chances in the first half with the majority of the play being in the midfield.

After the halftime break, Sheridan drew close again in the 61st minute from a corner which saw the ball ring off the crossbar before being cleared by the Lords. The Bruins continued to be on top as the second half went on, but Durham stood firm at the back and tried to hit their opposition on the counter attack.

Sheridan eventually opened the scoring in the 76th minute after some nice work on the right wing from Spencer Barber saw him send a cross into the box where it took a slight deflection of a DC defender before finding its way into the net.

Durham started pushing for an equalizer and would nearly find an equalizer from a header off a corner, but the ball went just over the bar.

The Bruins scored a second goal late in extra time after Chidibere Nnolim completed a great run from his own half through the Durham defence before then sending a shot into the bottom left corner for the insurance marker.

Grant finished the elimination match with nine saves, while Sheridan keeper Chester Ashby picked up the clean sheet with 10 saves made.

Despite being knocked out the provincial championship, Durham will be back in action in two weeks time when they host the 2019 CCAA men's soccer national championship at Vaso's Field, starting on Nov. 6.

Overall Record: 10-3-1 (W-L-D)
