Falcons on Fire at the Plate in Wins over Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – On Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field, the Fanshawe Softball team (9-7) swept the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-14) by scores of 19-1 and 12-1.

Fanshawe got on the board first, when a Jenna Mclean (Watford, ON) double scored Paige Askew (London, ON) and Kennedi Roth (Stratford, ON) in the opening frame. The Falcons were on fire in the third inning. Roth doubled to start, followed by a single from Marandee Hunter (Chatham, ON). Mclean came up big once again, recording her second 2-RBI double of the game. Sara Reading (Listowel, ON) then scored Mclean to continue Fanshawe's run. Kelsey McLennan (Brandon, MB) then hit a huge triple to make the score 7-0 for the Birds. But the Falcons were not done yet, as Morgan Lowry (Middlesex-Centre) then singled to score McLennan. Askew added an RBI, then Jana Beiman (Moorefield, ON) stole home. With two on base, Hunter had a massive hit that made it over the fence, recording Fanshawe's first home run of the season. The Falcons recorded 11 runs in the top of the third to make the score 13-0. Mohawk scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons responded. In the top of the fifth, Fanshawe added six runs, including a 3-run shot from Roth to make the final score 19-1.

Mohawk's Kerri Smith (1-8) was the losing pitcher, and Fanshawe's Lowry (7-1) was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts. Lowry currently has 102 strikeouts, which sets a new Fanshawe Softball record for most strikeouts in a season. She also holds the Fanshawe Softball record for the most all-time career strikeouts with 170. The OCAA season strikeout record of 119 is currently held by Seneca's Debbie Wadsworth in 1999. Wadsworth had pitched 78 innings for an average of 10.68 strikeouts per game. With 61 innings pitched, Lowry has an average of 11.7 strikeouts per game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Roth started the scoring by clearing the fence yet again to record her second home run of the day. Askew made the score 2-0 in the second inning with a RBI single. In the fourth inning, Katie Berg (Stratford, ON) scored teammate Katelyn Wright (Little Britain, ON). Mclean followed that with an out of the park homer of her own to make the score 6-0. In the top of the final inning with the bases loaded, Mclean hit a 2-RBI single to extend Fanshawe's lead to 11-1. Kamryn Lamond (Tavistock, ON) then scored Hunter and despite Mohawk's best efforts, the Falcons would go on to win 12-1. Local rookie pitcher Julia Smith (2-6) was the winning pitcher and Mohawk's Olivia Thompson (0-6) took the loss.
