Rudder converts hat-trick in Lords first win

Box Score NORTH YORK, Ont. - Behind the strength of a hat-trick performance from freshman striker Makayla Rudder (Scarborough, Ont.), the Durham Lords women's soccer team earned their first win of the season with a convincing 4-0 effort versus the George Brown Huskies on Friday night.

It was a slow start to the game but Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.) had the first chance when she had the ball in the back of the net, but it was called back due to an offside earlier in the play.

Juras continued to cause havoc down the left wing in the 39th minute when her shot rung off the crossbar.

The Lords finally got the goal that they deserved just moments later when Rudder was unmarked at the back post and tapped home for her first of the season and first career OCAA goal.

Heading into the break, Durham had a 1-0 lead and held George Brown without a single shot on target.

Rudder got her second of the game in the 52nd minute when she put pressure on the Huskies goalkeeper to dispossess her and managed to head home into the empty net.

The Lords kept rolling when they were given a penalty after Rudder was fouled in the box. The freshman striker converted into the bottom right corner to get her third of the game completing the hat-trick in the 57th.

Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) rounded out the scoring in the 73rd minute. The Lords were on a counter attack and she did well to get by a couple players before rounding the keeper to tap home for her first goal of the 2019 OCAA campaign.

Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.) earned the clean sheet for the Lords.

"Our tempo was much better tonight," said head coach Alex Bianchi following the road win. "We played at a higher pace and string a lot of pass together. Our defensive discipline was good so we have lots to move forward with."

Last season's bronze medalists have one win and a loss from their opening two games of the season and will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they head north to take on the Sault Cougars at 1 p.m., before facing the Cambrian Golden Shield the next day.

Overall Record: 2-5-0 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 1-1-0

Next match: Saturday, Sept. 21 @ Sault Cougars (1 p.m. - Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.)
