MEDALISTS OLD AND NEW IN OCAA BADMINTON

KITCHENER, Ont. - The 2020 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships concluded on Friday with a couple of familiar faces atop the podium.

Ramnish Kumar (India) of Humber successfully defended his men's singles title with a thrilling 21-18, 13-21, 21-7 win over silver medalist Pranav Satheesh (Kitchener, Ont.) of Conestoga in the finale. Kumar avenged a loss to Satheesh in the West Regionals. In the bronze finale, UTM's Ryan Chen (Toronto, Ont.) defeated Areej Shalwani (Pakistan) of George Brown 21-14, 9-21, 21-13.

Chloe Rowe (Newcastle, Ont.) of Humber is now a four-time OCAA women's doubles gold medalist, partnering with Susanna Quach (Vaughan, Ont.) to defeat Fanshawe's Maeyen Chua (Philippines) and Helen Ngu (London, Ont.) 21-3, 21-9 in the final. Georgian's Kiersten Hillman (Bracebridge, Ont.) and Paige Hillman (Bracebridge, Ont.) defeated UTM's Kate Huang (Halifax, N.S.) and Danna Biboso (Oakville, Ont.) 21-15, 20-22, 21-16 for the bronze medal.

There is a new women's singles champion of OCAA as Huyen Le (Vietnam) beat two-time defending OCAA champion Anh Hoang (Vietnam) 21-12, 21-11 in an all-George Brown finale. In the bronze medal match, Fanshawe's Glyvette Etis (Philippines) defeated Jessica Maher (Tottenham, Ont.) of Georgian 21-15, 21-16.

Similar to Le, Seneca's men's doubles team of Saatvik Mahajan (India) and Mohammed Faizan Shaikh (India) knocked out defending champions Arpit Taneja (India) and Ayubu Touray (Toronto) of Humber 21-16, 21-18 in the gold medal match. UTM's Vern Chew (Malaysia) and Nicholas Hon (Richmond Hill, Ont.) won the bronze medal with a thrilling 21-16, 16-21, 21-17 win over Centennial's Peter Nie (Toronto, Ont.) and Hamza Munawar (Bowmanville, Ont.).

Seneca's Poy Lo (Markham, Ont.) and Christine Nguyen (Whitby, Ont.) won the mixed doubles title over Humber's Victoria Duong (Kitchener, Ont.) and Desmond Chan (Mississauga, Ont.) 21-13, 24-22. Centennial's Brandon Cheung (Scarborough, Ont.) and Jia Yi Feng (Scarborough, Ont.) downed UTM's Cindy Zhou (China) and Kyle Yip (Hong Kong) 21-11, 21-11 in the bronze finale.

Humber won the men's team title, while Humber and George Brown shared the women's team title.

The gold and silver medalists will now advance to the 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga from Mar. 4-7.
