HUMBER REPEATS AS OCAA MEN'S BASEBALL CHAMPIONS

HUMBER REPEATS AS OCAA MEN'S BASEBALL CHAMPIONS

OSHAWA, Ont. - On an exciting final day of the 2019 OCAA Men's Baseball Championship, the Humber Hawks claimed their second consecutive provincial banner after defeating the Durham Lords 9-2 in Oshawa on Saturday afternoon.

Humber remains is one of only two programs to win the provincial championship following the inception of baseball to the OCAA in 2013, alongside the four-time champions St. Clair Saints.

Humber pitcher Steven Hough was named the Championship MVP after picking up a decisive 10-0 shutout victory over Durham on Day 1 of the provincial tournament, before being called on once again and delivering a 9-2 win versus those same Lords in the gold medal game. Hough finished the OCAA championship with 11 innings pitched, allowing just two earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out nine batters.

Hawks catcher and designated hitter Hunter Bisser was also recognized as a Championship All-Star, along with outfielder Liam Sutherland. Both players provided outstanding offensive weekends for the gold medal winning Hawks with Bisser recording five hits and five RBI, while Sutherland scored three RBI and two runs on six hits.

Durham made it tough on the Hawks to repeat after earning their place in the gold medal game with a 3-2 extra innings win over the St. Clair Saints to open Day 2 of the championship, before also knocking off the Hawks 4-1 later in the afternoon. The Lords had to settle for silver however as they were not able to complete the back-to-back victories over Humber required in the double elimination format.

Lords second baseman Jordan D'Amico was named a Championship All-Star alongside teammate Jake Legros. D'Amico finished the weekend with seven hits, including a monster Day 2 home run, knocking in four RBI and scoring three runs himself. Meanwhile, Legros earned the important Day 2 morning victory over the Saints to propel the Lords into the silver position. In the morning outing he held St. Clair to zero earned runs on six hits in eight innings. Legros also provided solid defence at third base and three hits, one run, and one RBI in the batter's box.

The St. Clair Saints picked up the OCAA bronze medal after dropping the opening game of the day to Durham. Brendan Renaud was selected as a Championship All-Star having delivered exceptional outfield defence, along with registering five hits, one run, and two RBI.
