ST. CLAIR SAINTS WIN 2021 OCAA MEN'S BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

ST. CLAIR SAINTS WIN 2021 OCAA MEN'S BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

OSHAWA, Ont. – The St. Clair Saints defeated the Humber Hawks 7-1 in the gold medal game of the 2021 OCAA Men's Baseball Championship on Saturday afternoon in Oshawa to claim sixth banner in program history.

Humber opened the final day of the championship with a 6-2 win over the Seneca Sting to earn their spot in the championship final. In the gold medal semifinal the Hawk were propelled by a four-run sixth inning, sparked by an RBI single from OCAA player of the year Dennis Dei Baning and a two RBI double from Tyrus Bath. Following the offensive burst late in the contest, Humber relief pitcher Maxim Skoropadsky shut out the Sting, striking out three over two innings, while conceding just one hit. Consistent at the plate for Seneca in the loss, Jordan Blake was named the Sting player of the game going 2-for-4, including a double, with a run. Meanwhile, Humber starting pitcher Braden Taylor was honoured as the Hawks player of the game, holding Seneca to just one earned run while striking out five over five innings. Seneca was awarded the bronze medal, while Evan Farrell was named an OCAA championship all-star.

Advancing to the gold medal game, the Hawks found themselves in a tough position having to defeat to No. 1 seed St. Clair Saints twice in a row in the double-elimination format tournament. St. Clair took advantage of a tired Hawks team, jumping ahead 5-0 after a five run third inning which was started by a two RBI single from Colin Robinson. Saints starting pitcher was impressive in his five innings of work, holding Humber to just one run on five hits and one walk. Then in relief, Jacob Rajsigl and Austin Oulds gave up just two hits combined to the Hawks over the final two innings to secure the win.

St. Clair returned to the top step after a two-year hiatus, now laying claim to six of the eight OCAA baseball championship banners since baseball became an official OCAA league sport in 2013. Dei Baning was named player of the game for Humber and Mike Hamlin received St. Clair player of the game. Oulds was joined by Colin Robinson as OCAA championship all-stars for the Saints, while Stephen Nahrabecki and Tyrus Bath earned the honour for Humber. Henry Real of St. Clair was named OCAA championship MVP.
