MAJOR HARDWARE HANDED OUT AT OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Humber Hawks stole the show at the 2020 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA ) Curling Championships, winning both the men's and women's team titles while also capturing the silver and bronze medals in mixed doubles.

Humber went undefeated in the men's competition with an overall record of 7-0. The Hawks edged OCAA silver medalist Mohawk 8-7 in the gold medal match. Fanshawe won the bronze medal courtesy of an 8-2 win over Sault.

Humber skip Zack Shurtleff (Burlington, Ont.) was named the Championship MVP of the competition as well as a First-Team All-Star. Humber second Brady Lumley (Belleville, Ont.) and vice Matthew Garner (Toronto, Ont.) were also named First-Team All-Stars, as was Mohawk lead Nicole Hillman (Hamilton, Ont.).

Fanshawe took three of the four Second-Team All-Star awards, including skip Charlie Richard (Woodstock, Ont.), lead Nicholas Robinson (Mount Brydges, Ont.) and second Owen Tester (Fort McMurray, Alta.). Mohawk vice Jarrett Matthews (Waterdown, Ont.) was also named a Second-Team All-Star.

Humber went undefeated in the women's competition with an overall record of 6-0. The Hawks defeated OCAA silver medalist Sault 6-3 in the gold medal match. Fanshawe defeated Confederation 6-4 in the bronze medal match.

Humber skip Kaitlyn Jones (Ottawa, Ont.) was named the Championship MVP of the competition as well as a First-Team All-Star. Also winning First-Team All-Star awards were Humber lead Brittany Elson (Mount Albert, Ont.), Fanshawe second Lauren Massey (London, Ont.) and Confederation vice Andrea Schram (Barwick, Ont.).

Earning women's Second-Team All-Star awards were Fleming lead Hannah Holtz (North Cobalt, Ont.), Sault second Amelia DiVincenzo (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Fanshawe vice Erin White (Chatham, Ont.) and Confederation skip Faith Hebert (Thunder Bay, Ont.).

In the first-ever OCAA mixed doubles competition, the Niagara-1 pairing of McKenna McGovern (Lambton Shores, Ont.) and Benjamin Jones (Brantford, Ont.) scored three in an extra end to defeat Humber-1 8-5 in the gold medal match. Niagara-1 won all nine matches it played. In the mixed doubles bronze match, Humber-2 defeated Niagara-2 by a score of 10-1.

McGovern and Humber's Brendan Jackson (Pincourt, Ont.) were named the respective women's and men's Championship MVP of the mixed competition. Jackson and teammate Jenna Clarke (Mississauga, Ont.) were named First-Team All-Stars, while McGovern and Humber's Davis Wiscombe (Bradford, Ont.) were named Second-Team All-Stars.

The OCAA traditionally hands out Fair Play Awards for demonstration of good sportsmanship. Receiving the Ron Fearon men's fair play award was the Confederation team of Jeremy Bertoldo (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Garrett Giles (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Sean Maurik (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Kurtwood McGuire (Fort Frances, Ont.). Awarded the Vern Dow women's fair play award was the Confederation team of Bailey Doblej (Whitesand First Nation), Vanessa Wyllie (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Scram and Hebert. The Hap Holman award was given to the Sault-1 mixed doubles team of Kristian Nelson (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Cassidy Dunnet (Atikokan, Ont.).

OCAA Coaches of the Year were also honoured. DJ Ronaldson of Fanshawe, Larry Rathje of Confederation and Chris Jay of Fanshawe were named the men's, women's and mixed doubles top coaches, respectively.
