PARITY REIGNS AT 2020 CCAA CURLING CANADA CHAMPIONSHIPS

PARITY REIGNS AT 2020 CCAA CURLING CANADA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Women's Championship

The first full day of competition opened with the Red Deer Queens toppling the defending CCAA Champions. The Douglas Royals seemed to be in control early, but the Queens took four in the fifth end to snatch the lead away. However, the Royals fought back and looked to have things in hand after the eighth. Red Deer tied things up in the tenth to force extra ends where they stole a point for the 9-8 win.

The other early matches were competitive as well but the eventual winners each pulled away at the end. Concordia beat NAIT 12-8, Fanshawe topped Sault 8-5 and Humber edged Augustana 6-4.

The afternoon draw was highlighted by the Concordia Thunder's gutsy win over the Fanshawe Falcons. The Falcons held a commanding 7-1 lead after four ends, but the Thunder got two in the fifth and singles in the remaining five ends to claw their way back to an 8-7 win.

The remaining women's contests were less competitive, with Humber downing Red Deer 9-4, NAIT doubling up Sault 10-5, and Douglas rebounding against Augustana 8-3.

Men's Championship

The NAIT Ooks and SAIT Trojans have a widely known rivalry on the ice, but it usually involves sticks and not brooms. The Trojans were in the driver's seat for much of this contest, leading 6-3 after nine ends. However, the Ooks secured the three points they needed in the tenth to force extra ends. NAIT then -stole a single point, and the match, in the eleventh to topple SAIT 7-6.

The Humber Hawks staged a comeback as well, scoring four in the final two ends to defeat the Concordia Thunder 7-5. Meanwhile Sault persevered over Lakeland 8-6 and Fanshawe overwhelmed Confederation 9-3 to wrap up the early draw.

The SAIT Trojans found themselves in the spotlight of the evening draw as well, but this time on the winning side. Unfazed by the tough loss earlier in the day, the Trojans conquered the Humber Hawks 10-5. SAIT scored early and often and prevented the previously undefeated Hawks from mustering a comeback.

The NAIT Ookpiks also suffered their first loss, when their cross-town rivals, the Concordia University of Edmonton, brought the Thunder in an 8-3 win. Rounding things out, Fanshawe put together a solid 13-4 victory over Lakeland while Sault climbed above .500 with their 13-2 defeat of Confederation.
