OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 2.

Glyvette Etis
School: Fanshawe
Program: Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Philippines
At the OCAA west regionals hosted by Humber College on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, Etis swept the competition to finish in first place in the women's singles competition. Etis went 5-0 in pool play, winning every set by an average score of 21-6. She then defeated UTM's Alice Xia 21-5, 21-7 in the semifinals to secure her spot at provincials. Etis finished the competition winning the first-place match 21-11, 21-7 over Humber's Melissa Duong. Etis will now set her sights on the OCAA championships being hosted by Conestoga College from Feb. 13-14.

Joshua Fadare
School: Humber
Program: Broadcasting - Radio
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Markham, Ont.
As a highly-touted recruit from the Canadian youth national team, Fadare has surpassed the hype surrounding his freshman campaign. The freshman middle blocker helped the top-ranked Humber Hawks win their 14th consecutive match, tying the program record from 1999. In Humber's 3-0 win on the road at Niagara on Jan. 30, Fadare finished with a game-high 16 points, including 13 kills on 24 swings (.417). In 11 matches this season, Fadare has led the Hawks in scoring seven times and currently sits 10th in the OCAA with a 4.0 points-per-set average.

Kyrin Henlin
School: Centennial
Program: Community and Child Studies Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Pickering, Ont.
Henlin's career-high 36 points boosted the Centennial Colts to an impressive 99-96 comeback victory over the Loyalist Lancers on Jan 31. Besides scoring 14 of his total points in the third quarter to put the home side back in the game, the second-year guard finished the night with four assists, two rebounds and one steal. Henlin shot 11-of-25 from the field and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line. After snapping a two-game losing streak, Centennial (8-7) will look to remain unbeaten at home when it plays host to Fleming on Tuesday night.

Shalena Horst
School: St. Clair
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Dutton, Ont.
Horst was instrumental in two big wins for the St. Clair Saints this past week, including a huge upset over the previously unbeaten Fanshawe Falcons on Jan. 29. Against defending champion Fanshawe, the third-year right side had 15 kills and 13 digs in a four-set victory. In a 3-0 win over the Conestoga Condors on Feb. 1, Horst had 13 kills, one service ace, two stuff blocks and four digs. Since joining St. Clair in January, the Saints are 6-0 and Horst is averaging 4.2 points per set. St. Clair looks to continue its perfect 2020 as it travels to Redeemer on Saturday.

Hunter Johns
School: Conestoga
Program: Career Development Professional
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Waterloo, Ont.
Johns led the way with a double-double for the Conestoga Condors in their Jan. 30 home game against Redeemer. The fifth-year guard scored a game-high 26 points while sharing the lead with 12 rebounds in Conestoga's 88-42 win. Johns has averaged 17.3 points in Conestoga's last three games. Her performance helped Conestoga secure a winning month and stay in the hunt for a playoff position in the West Division. The Condors open February with three straight road games at Mohawk on Thursday, at Sheridan on Saturday and at Fanshawe on Feb. 15.

Jacobus Vanderpol
School: Redeemer
Program: Business
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Hamilton, Ont.
A banged up Redeemer Royals squad went 2-0 this past week, including an impressive 93-89 road win against the Sheridan Bruins on Feb. 1. Redeemer opened the week with a narrow 89-88 win at Conestoga on Jan. 30. Vanderpol led the Royals with 22 points and 10 rebounds in that contest. The fourth-year forward followed this up with season highs with a team-high 29 points and 13 rebounds against Sheridan. The pair of victories moved Redeemer into first place in the OCAA West Division standings heading into a key meeting at Humber on Thursday.
