OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 16.

Brendan Jackson
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Pincourt, Que.
Jackson was named men's Championship MVP in the first-ever mixed doubles competition at the recent curling provincials. Teaming with Jenna Clarke, Jackson's Humber-1 duo went 6-1 in round robin play, advancing to the gold medal match with an 11-1 win over Humber-2 in the semifinals. In a competitive finale, Jackson and Clarke used the hammer to score twice to force an extra end, but ultimately lost to Niagara-1 by an 8-5 score. Jackson and Clark were both named First-Team All-Stars for their round robin performances.

Kaitlyn Jones
School: Humber
Program: Broadcasting - Radio
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Jones, the third-year skip of the Humber women, led her teammates to a perfect record at the 2020 OCAA Curling Championships hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont., helping the Hawks capture the OCAA women's team crown for the first time since 2017. Humber scored five in the sixth end to lift the Hawks to a 6-3 win over Sault in the gold medal match. Jones, a newcomer to the Humber and a 2018 World Junior Curling champion, was named both Championship MVP and a First-Team All-Star at provincials.

Huyen Le
School: George Brown
Program: English as a Second Language
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Vietnam
Le is the new OCAA women's singles champion in badminton, dethroning the two-time defending OCAA champion and George Brown teammate Anh Hoang 21-12, 21-11 in the finale. Le was undefeated at provincials, winning every set by an average score of 21-7. Prior to the championship, Le was named OCAA Women's Badminton Player of the Year and an OCAA All-Star. She will now move on to represent George Brown and the OCAA at next month's 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships.

Poy Lo
School: Seneca
Program: Computer System Technology
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Markham, Ont.
Lo, along with partner Christine Nguyen, captured the mixed doubles title at the OCAA Badminton Championships hosted by Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ont. The tandem went 7-0 at provincials, winning each set by an average score of 21-13. They remained undefeated in post-season action following a perfect OCAA East Regional. It is Seneca's first mixed doubles in three seasons. Lo will now set his sights towards the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga from Mar. 4-7.

McKenna McGovern
School: Niagara
Program: Recreation Therapy
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Lambton Shores, Ont.
McGovern was named women's Championship MVP in the first-ever mixed doubles competition at the recent curling provincials. Teaming with Benjamin Jones, McGovern's Niagara-1 pairing won the OCAA championship in dramatic fashion, scoring three in an extra end to defeat Humber-1 8-5 in the gold medal match. It ended a perfect competition for McGovern-Jones, going 7-0 in round robin play before defeating Niagara-2 by a score of 8-2 in the semifinals. McGovern was named a Second-Team All-Star for her round robin performance.

Zack Shurtleff
School: Humber
Program: Behavioural Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Curling
Hometown: Burlington, Ont.
Shurtleff, a two-sport athlete, became a double OCAA medalist this season, skipping his teammates to a perfect record en route to a provincial men's curling championship. In an exciting back-and-forth contest, Humber score twice in the final end to pull out an 8-7 victory over Mohawk in the gold medal match, Humber's first men's title since 2017. Shurtleff was named both Championship MVP and a First-Team All-Star for his efforts. Shurtleff, the 2018 OCAA Mixed Curling Coach of the Year, won a provincial bronze medal last semester with the men's rugby team.
