OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Nov. 20.

All OCAA Stars of the Week will receive an acrylic bag tag courtesy of Nothers, the Preferred Awards Supplier of the OCAA.

Olivia Bender
School: Conestoga
Program: Social Service Worker
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Waterloo, Ont.
Bender was the leader in pushing Conestoga to a one win, one loss week against opponents ranked in the top three. On Nov. 16, the Condors pushed undefeated Humber to a fifth set for the first time all season with the Bender-led Condors falling just short in a 3-2 loss. Having to look forward, Bender picked up where the fifth-year senior and team captain left off guiding the young Condor squad to 3-1 decisive victory over Mohawk on Nov. 19. Bender accumulated 26 total points and 24 total digs averaging a volleyball double-double in the two matches.

Cianah Miller
School: Loyalist
Program: Business Sales & Marketing
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Miller was instrumental in a pair of Loyalist victories over the weekend. The second-year guard scored 15 points while grabbing four rebounds and two steals in a 70-50 victory over George Brown on Nov. 18. That was just a warm-up as Miller followed through the following day with a career-high 26 points in 73-60 win over Centennial. Miller recorded a double-double grabbing 14 rebounds while also contributing seven steals and six assists in an all-around terrific game. Miller was 4-of-5 beyond the three-point arc, and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Carter Normand
School: Algonquin
Program: Media & Interactive Design
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Normand scored a career-high 32 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and 8-of-11 beyond the three-point arc in a 94-83 loss to the Georgian Grizzlies on Nov. 18. The second-year guard also went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line while adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Despite the loss Normand was a bright spot for the Algonquin Wolves, knocking down shots at key times to keep the team in the game. Algonquin has a chance to end its five-game losing skid with a trip east to Durham and Fleming this weekend.

Carlie Pappano
School: Canadore
Program: Criminal Justice
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: North Bay, Ont.
Pappano continued an outstanding sophomore season with the Canadore Panthers with another solid performance on Nov. 19 against the Algonquin Wolves. The outside hitter led the way both offensively and defensively with 16 kills, two service aces and 13 digs in a four-set victory. Pappano is currently second among OCAA players averaging 3.70 kills per set. Canadore improved to 5-1 on the season and currently sit in second place in the East Division and take a road trip to Toronto this weekend with matches against George Brown and Centennial.

Peter Pilling
School: Mohawk
Program: Chemical Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: St. Catharines, Ont.
As a first-year setter, Pilling has showcased significant talent with the Mohawk Mountaineers through the early parts of the season. This past week Pilling had a combined 58 assists in two matches, including a season-high 36 in a four-set victory over the Conestoga Condors on Nov. 19. Pilling also added a service ace for good measure. Pilling currently ranks ninth in the OCAA with 152 assists through seven matches. Pilling and the Mountaineers have an opportunity improve on its 4-3 record they host Humber on Saturday.

Ali Traore
School: Fanshawe
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Traore fell one rebound shy of a pair of double-doubles in two Fanshawe victories this past week. In Fanshawe's 94-82 win over Redeemer on Nov. 16, the second-year forward scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, grabbing nine rebounds while contributing an assist and steal. At Canadore on Nov. 19, Traore scored 20 points while snatching a season-best 14 rebounds while adding three assists in a 95-73 decision. Traore averaged 16.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the two victories. Traore has been a key piece in Fanshawe's lineup this season.
