BROWN NAMED OCAA GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR

BROWN NAMED OCAA GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR

TORONTO - Rob Brown of St. Lawrence College was named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Coach of the Year on Wednesday as selected by his peers as part of the closing ceremonies at the OCAA Golf Championships.

Brown has coached at St. Lawrence the past eight seasons, and saw his men's team earn the OCAA Division I bronze medal for the second consecutive season. The team had strong performances at OCAA invitationals which led into the just concluded provincial championship. The Vikings never finished any lower than third in all five competitions.

In addition, for the first time in a number of years, the program fielded a full women's team. Brown spearheaded a campaign to attract female students to the program after concerns were raised nationally regarding the lack of female participation throughout the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Part of Brown's efforts helped the OCAA double its women's field at this year's provincials.

Brown saw one of his golfers win an OCAA individual medal for the first time in five seasons when Jamaal Moussaoui (Kingston, Ont.) took bronze at provincials. Brown truly cares about the personal development of his golfers. Although they typically come in not short on confidence but lacking maturity, after the first year under Brown, they are professional and focused individuals that are better prepared for life after post-secondary education.

Four golfers will be honoured as CCAA All-Canadians later this month. Fanshawe's Thomas Code (Dorchester, Ont.) went wire-to-wire to win the OCAA men's individual gold medal this past week.

Former OCAA men's champion Conner Watt (Toronto) of Humber who won the 2019 silver medal is also an All-Canadian for the second time, as is teammate and new women's champion Hayley McCallum (Mississauga, Ont.). St. Clair's Shannon Coffey (Windsor, Ont.) rounds out the All-Canadians from Ontario after winning women's silver this past week.

Members of the All-Ontario Teams were previously announced based on the top five male and top four female individual scorers from provincials. They included Code, Watt, Moussaoui, Humber's Iz Hustler (Toronto), and Niagara's Logan Lammerant (Seaforth, Ont.) for the men, and McCallum, Coffey, Humber's Elaine Surjoprajogo (Brampton, Ont.) and Georgian's Rachael Rier (Hanover, Ont.) for the women.
