OUELLETTE, HAMPSON NEW OCAA GOLF CHAMPIONS

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - Madison Ouellette and Mitchel Hampson went wire-to-wire to capture gold at the 2022 OCAA Golf Championships this week in Niagara Falls.

Hampson, a second-year golf management student from Fanshawe led the three-day tournament on the men's side after every round to finish six under par. Hampson's incredible play led the Falcons men's golf team to their first provincial title since 1992. Teammate Ben Landers also shot brilliantly for the Falcons, bringing home silver after finishing with 213 (three-under) for the tournament and playing his best round of the tournament on Wednesday with a score of 66.

The Falcons finished with a three-day team total of 873 (nine-over), five shots ahead of second place Humber College who finished with a 878 (14-over) to capture silver. Humber's Daniel Talmage finished the tournament with a bronze individual medal shooting 217 (one-over) through all three rounds.

The OCAA men's individual medalists, along with fourth and fifth place finishers Trey Ross (two-over) and Matt Bremer (three-over) of Humber are all named to the OCAA All-Ontario Team.

The Georgian College Grizzlies captured the OCAA bronze on the men's side.

Ouellette's impressive tournament play with an overall score of 287 (11-over) led the Hawks to their third consecutive gold medal finish on the women's side with teammates, Haley McCallum (24-over) and Elaine Surjoprajo (26-over) also captured individual silver and bronze respectively. Ouellette finished second behind the three-time champion McCallum in 2021.

Along with Ouellette, McCallum and Surjoprajo, fourth place finisher Shannon Coffey (32-over) of St. Clair are all named to the OCAA All-Ontario Team.

The St. Clair Saints captured their second consecutive OCAA silver finishing with a team score of 504, while the Saints men also captured their fourth straight OCAA Division II title.

St. Lawrence rounded out the women's division capturing the OCAA bronze with a team score of 653.

Both Ouellette and Hampson have earned an exemption to the Golf Ontario amateur championships in their respective fields.

Niagara College's Ray Sarkis was named the OCAA Fair Play recipient for his tireless efforts over the four-day event.

The OCAA's top golfers will advance to the CCAA National Championship from Oct. 17-20 at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Ajax. The event will be hosted by Durham College.
