GEORGE BROWN INTRODUCES SAMBU AS MEN'S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH

TORONTO - George Brown Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Sambu as head coach of the men's basketball program.

"We're extremely happy to have Coach Sambu join our program," said Manager of Athletics Melanie Gerin-Lajoie. "As an applicant from out of province his name was initially not familiar to me, but his resume and extensive high performance coaching background very quickly spoke for themselves. Peter has a tremendous passion for the game, a contagious energy and is highly focused on what this program needs to do to take it to the next level."

A native of Toronto, Sambu arrives a decorated coach with over 20 years of post-secondary experience, highlighted by highly successful tenures at four CCAA institutions. From 1999 to 2003 Sambu spent four seasons as head coach men's basketball for the SAIT Trojans, winning an ACAC gold medal in his first season and silver in his second and third.

After spending time as an assistant at Division-I Juco North Dakota State College of Science and the Gary Steelheads of the USBL, he joined the Kings University of Edmonton as head coach of the women's program. In his first season, Sambu went 16-4, made an ACAC final four appearance and was named ACAC Coach of the Year. He then spent two years as head coach of the Lakeland Rustlers men's team going a combined 38-2 in regular season play, and in his second year with the program finishing the regular season as the top-ranked program in the country after going an undefeated 20-0. 
 
He has also spent time with the Saskatchewan provincial team, Nipissing University, and at the Indigenous Basketball World Games. Most recently Sambu spent the 2017-18 season with the Olds Broncos women's basketball team, going 15-6 and finishing the regular season ranked eighth in the CCAA.
 
"I'm truly grateful and honoured to be joining the George Brown family. Firstly I want to thank my family, Olds College and the community of Olds for the wonderful support I received accepting this position," said Sambu. "Thanks to Coach Avery Harrison, my mentor, for allowing me to grow as a coach under his leadership this past year. I want to thank George Brown, Melanie [Gerin-Lajoie] and Mark [Couch] for this opportunity to lead the Huskies men's basketball program moving forward."
