DURHAM, ST. LAWRENCE HOSTS OCAA MEN’S RUGBY MEDAL MATCHES

DURHAM, ST. LAWRENCE HOSTS OCAA MEN’S RUGBY MEDAL MATCHES

The 2022 fall championship season in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) concludes this Saturday with the awarding of medals in men's rugby.

The Durham Lords go for an undefeated season when they host the Georgian Grizzlies in the gold medal match at Thompson Rugby Park in Oshawa, Ont. Durham has won five straight OCAA matches in 2022, including last Saturday's 52-8 triumph over the Sheridan Bruins in the OCAA semi-finals. Jackson MacIntosh (Brooklin) scored three tries for the Lords in the victory.

Georgian earned its spot in the gold medal match with a 34-15 victory over the defending champion St. Lawrence Surge on Sunday.

This marks the third time in four seasons that Durham has faced Georgian in the OCAA gold medal match. Durham won both times in 2018 and 2019. The Grizzlies have advanced to the last three OCAA gold medal matches, losing each time. Georgian has the longest current medal streak in OCAA, which will extend to seven seasons no matter the outcome on Saturday.

These two teams met back on Oct. 15, with Durham taking a 45-15 victory for Georgian's only loss of 2022. Durham's Brendyn Beck (Port Hope) and Georgian's Rob Reiners (Ilderton) were one-two in OCAA scoring during the regular season with 53 and 52 points, respectively.

The OCAA bronze medal will be awarded at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ont., as the host Surge take on the Sheridan Bruins. St. Lawrence looks to make it consecutive seasons on the OCAA podium while Sheridan looks to win its first men's rugby medal since its championship season of 2017.

Samuel Meindl (Trenton) led St. Lawrence in scoring during the regular season with 31 points, while Sheridan's Quintin Kleppe (Rockwood) was its team leader with 26 points.
