SEMI-FINALS SET AT OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

ALGONQUIN ADVANCES PAST LAMBTON

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Algonquin College Thunder (Ottawa, Ont.) advanced to the semi-finals after defeating the Lambton College Lions (Sarnia, Ont.) by a score of 66-52 Friday afternoon in the quarter-finals to open the OCAA Championship weekend. The event is being hosted by St. Clair College at the SportsPlex in Windsor.

Algonquin went ahead 22-15 after the opening quarter and increased their lead to 40-26 by the halftime. Lambton went ice cold in third quarter only tallying six points in the frame and although they put together a nice fourth quarter could come no closer than 14 points down the stretch.

Algonquin held Lambton to just 26 per cent shooting in the contest including only a pair of triples while winning the rebounding total 45-33.

East Division First-Team All-Star Rita Sibo (Gatineau, Que.) was named Player of the Game for Algonquin after scoring 11 points but hauled in 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Fellow East Division First-Team All-Star selection Michaela Branker (Ottawa, Ont.) scored a game-high 17 points for Algonquin with Sierra Peck (Prince Edward County, Ont.) chipping in with 11 points.

West Division Rookie of the Year award winner Breanna Pretty (Sarnia, Ont.) scored 11 points for Lambton to go with seven rebounds and five assists. West Division Second-Team All-Star Cassidy Crowe (Sarnia, Ont.) also had 11 points and five steals for Lambton.

FANSHAWE TOPS DURHAM

The Fanshawe College Falcons (London, Ont.) punched their ticket to the medal round with a 79-70 victory over the Durham College Lords (Oshawa, Ont.) Friday afternoon in the quarter-finals of the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship being hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor.

Durham had an early lead but Fanshawe responded to win the opening quarter 22-10. The teams played nearly even through the next two quarters with Durham closing the final frame well. However, the damage was done and Fanshawe finished strong to advance to the semi-finals.

Fanshawe used their depth well with 12 players notching marks on the scoresheet outscoring Durham 21-3 in points off the bench.

Natalie Warren (London, Ont.) was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game after scoring 13 points to go with five rebounds. OCAA Player of the Year Chuot Angou (London, Ont.) led Fanshawe with 21 points and seven rebounds. A monster game by East Division Player of the Year Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) to earn Durham's Player of the Game honours was not enough, scoring 37 points to go with 24 rebounds in a spectacular double-double effort. Andrea Zulich (Sudbury, Ont.) had 18 points and eight rebounds to also reach double figures for Durham.

ST. CLAIR OUTLASTS GEORGE BROWN

The St. Clair College Saints (Windsor, Ont.) packed the SportsPlex for their quarter-final matchup with the George Brown Huskies (Toronto, Ont.) at the OCAA Championship and outlasted the visitors 74-66 Friday night.

Ahead 33-18 at the half the Saints allowed George Brown to tie the game 46-46 early in the fourth quarter but staved off the run to pull away down the stretch with some key shots. St. Clair made 10 triples in the game and cleared the glass for 52-41 edge.

Noor Bazzi (Windsor, Ont.) scored 17 points while adding 16 boards to record the double-double on her way to the St. Clair Player of the Game award. Jana Kucera (Chatham, Ont.) scored 20 points for the Saints with sister Logan netting 13 points and Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, Ont.) chipping in with 12 points.

Victoria Lawrence (Ottawa, Ont.) had 17 points for George Brown but Zae Sellers (Minneapolis, Minn.) was named Player of the Game with 16 points while adding four assists and four steals.

HUMBER OUSTS SHERIDAN

The Humber College Hawks (Etobicoke, Ont.) were too much for the Sheridan College Bruins (Brampton, Ont.) Friday night and handed them an 85-66 defeat in the quarter-finals of the OCAA championship being hosted by St. Clair College.

Humber was never challenged in this game posting a 24-13 opening quarter lead and were comfortably ahead 45-23 by the intermission. Sheridan trailed by as much as 31 points in the third quarter before Humber cruised down the stretch.

Felicia Velasquez (Brampton, Ont.) was named Humber's Player of the Game scoring 18 points and filled the stat line with seven rebounds and eight assists. Ivana Twumasi (Toronto, Ont.) scored a game-high 20 points for Humber with Jahnae Gyles (Port Credit, Ont.) and Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton, Ont.) each adding 12 points.
