FANSHAWE, ST. CLAIR ONCE AGAIN FOR OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CROWN

FANSHAWE GETS HOT IN SEMI-FINAL WIN OVER ALGONQUIN

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Fanshawe College Falcons (London, Ont.) were too much for the Algonquin College Thunder (Ottawa, Ont.) early and late Saturday afternoon at the OCAA championship hosted by St. Clair College winning by a score of 83-73. With the semi-final win Fanshawe is looking to repeat as OCAA gold medalists in the championship final on Sunday at the SportsPlex.

Fanshawe attempted to run away with the game early going up 20-7 but Algonquin stayed within striking distance down 25-18 entering the second quarter. Fanshawe was up 44-36 at the half but Algonquin played their best stretch using a 15-3 run to start the third taking the lead and eventually were up by as much as five points. Fanshawe righted the ship and the teams were all square 59-59 heading to the final frame. Tied 65-65 early in the fourth it seemed the game would go down to the wire but Fanshawe used a pair of runs to leave no doubt of the outcome.

Fanshawe made 10 triples in the game and shot 46 per cent from deep while scoring 28 points off 21 Algonquin turnovers in the contest.

West Division First-Team All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year Mikhaila Wright (London, Ont.) was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game after dominating with 36 points to go with five rebounds. OCAA Player of the Year Chuot Angou (London, Ont.) scored 17 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter for Fanshawe and added five rebounds.

Sierra Peck (Prince Edward County, Ont.) was named Player of the Game for Algonquin after scoring 13 points while adding six rebounds and seven assists. East Division First-Team All-Star Rita Sibo (Gatineau, Que.) scored 19 points and went for a double-double with 10 rebounds missing the triple-double by a pair of assists finishing with eight. Michaela Branker (Ottawa, Ont.) also scored 13 points for Algonquin while Arianna Gagnon (Timmins, Ont.) and Nour Abdullah (Syria) each chipped in with 10 points.

ST. CLAIR UPSETS HUMBER TO SET UP 2019 OCAA FINAL REMATCH

The St. Clair College Saints (Windsor, Ont.) sent their home crowd away happy by narrowly upsetting the Humber College Hawks (Etobicoke, Ont.) at the OCAA championship by a score of 66-65 Saturday night at the SportsPlex. Provincially top-ranked Humber who is the nation's eighth ranked team had lost only once this season. With the win St. Clair will look to avenge their loss to Fanshawe (London, Ont.) in a rematch of last season's OCAA title game.

St. Clair used the crowd to their advantage and were up 18-5 before Humber closed the frame well to make it 18-15 entering the second quarter. Humber carried the momentum into the second quarter overtaking St. Clair by a bucket before the Saints slid ahead 35-34 by the intermission. The game featured six ties and 14 lead changes and like a boxing match the teams traded punches the rest of the contest. With the game tied 63-63 St. Clair used a key backdoor feed to score a bucket that resulted in a three-point play after a foul. Humber answered with a basket, but the teams traded empty possessions and time expired with the St. Clair faithful celebrating the upset.

The Saints were statistically beaten in most categories but forced 20 Humber turnovers and made 12 shots from distance which was enough to create the winning margin.

Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, Ont.) earned the St. Clair Player of the Game award after scoring a team-high 17 points including four triples to go with four rebounds and three assists. Logan Kucera (Chatham, Ont.) had 13 points for St. Clair with Noor Bazzi (Windsor, Ont.) and Jana Kucera (Chatham, Ont.) each tallying 12 points.

Ivana Twumasi (Toronto, Ont.) had 14 points and was named Player of the Game for Humber. West Division Second-Team All-Star Jahnae Gyles (Port Credit, Ont.) chipped in with 11 points for Humber who will play for bronze against Algonquin College (Ottawa, Ont.) on Sunday.
