OCAA ANNOUNCES WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS SCHEDULE FOR 2022 SEASON

TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) announced today its 2022 regular season schedule for women's rugby sevens, set to begin on Saturday, Sept. 17.

OCAA WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE

KEY DATES
Regular Season Start Date: Saturday, Sept. 17
Regular Season End Date: Sunday, Oct. 16
Championship Date: Saturday, Oct. 29

WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS
Algonquin (Ottawa)
Durham (Oshawa)
Fleming (Peterborough)
Humber (Etobicoke)
Loyalist (Belleville)*
St. Lawrence (Kingston)

Seneca (North York)
*2022 OCAA Championship Host

A single-division format will remain for 2022 with teams playing a triple round robin format totalling 18 regular season matches each.

Women's rugby sevens has a unique structure where matches will be played on three separate weekends at a single location. The matches on Sept. 17-18 will be hosted by the Humber Hawks (Etobicoke); the Oct. 1-2 matches will be hosted by the Durham Lords (Oshawa); and the Oct. 15-16 matches will be hosted by the Fleming Knights (Peterborough). A single round robin will take place at these weekend competitions, meaning teams will certainly be familiar with each other by regular season's end.

The team to beat this year is Humber as reigning gold medalists and winners of three of the five OCAA championships awarded in women's rugby sevens. Humber defeated Durham 36-14 in last season's gold medal match. Humber hosts the first round of matches, which includes a rematch against Durham on Sept. 18.

Durham has advanced to the OCAA gold medal match in consecutive seasons, first losing to the Algonquin Wolves (Ottawa) in 2019 then Humber in 2021. Algonquin sat out the 2021 season, with the first match of the 2022 calendar a meeting between the last two provincial champions with the Wolves and Hawks tangling.

Fleming upset the St. Lawrence Surge (Kingston) 10-0 in last year's bronze medal match and will meet again on three separate occasions, including Sept. 18 at Humber. St. Lawrence and Fleming finished third and fourth, respectively, in last season's abbreviated regular season standings.

A total of 63 matches will be played over the six competition dates in 2022. The top six teams at the conclusion of the regular season - including the host Loyalist Lancers (Belleville) - move on to the OCAA championship. (If Loyalist finishes in seventh place, it will replace the sixth seed.)

The top two teams advance directly to the OCAA semi-finals, while the remaining four play in the quarter-finals, with the two winners advancing. All championship matches will take place on Oct. 29 at Loyalist College (Belleville).

All OCAA schedules for the 2022-23 season, including dates, times and locations, are subject to change.
