SENECA FALLS SHORT OF WOMEN'S SOCCER NATIONAL BRONZE

CCAA Bronze Final: VIU Mariners 1, Seneca Sting 0

VIU captured the bronze medal at the CCAA women's soccer nationals as they defeated Seneca College 1-0. The game saw action mostly in the midfield, with both teams unable to break through each other's defensive lines.

After adjusting at the half, VIU pressed forward with an extra attacker up top and managed to capitalize in the 70th minute when Jade Dillabough broke free and slipped a ball to the back of the Seneca goal.

VIU held on with some strong play from their three centre-backs and wing-backs thwarting away any Seneca attacks.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were Carley Uddenberg from Seneca and Jade Dillabough from VIU.

CCAA Placement Match: Humber Hawks 2, Red Deer Queens 0

The fourth and final day of competition began under overcast and rainy conditions as the Humber Hawks from the OCAA went up against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in 5/6 positioning game this morning.

After a slow start for both teams, the Hawks captain, Kaitlynn Russell, converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute to give Humber the lead. Later in the half, as a light rain persisted, Humber buried a long shot in the 68th minute from Hayley Lewis, for their second goal and sealed the game for the win.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were Sofia Quinteros from Red Deer and Remo Pelletier of the Humber Hawks.

CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: *VIU Mariners 1, Humber Hawks 1 (*4-3 PKs)

The second match of the day saw the PACWEST champs from VIU go up against the OCAA champion Humber Hawks in the first bronze medal semi-final game of the day.

The game started on a slow note, with both teams playing tentatively with no one willing to take any chances, but that soon changed as the Hawks opened scoring in the 17th minute off of a goal from Chantel Spalla.

Scoring chances developed for both sides as the game progressed, with neither being able to find the back of the goal, but VIU's persistence and pressure paid off with the equalizer in the 81st minute, scored by Kanae Yamamoto.

For the second time in as many days, the Hawks and their opponents were headed to the penalty spot to determine the winner. VIU prevailed as Jade Dillabough calmly tucked away her team's final kick for the win and a place in Saturday's Bronze Medal Game.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were Kiara Puntillo from the Hawks and Kanae Yamamoto from the Mariners.

CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: Seneca Sting 1, Red Deer Queens 0

The last match of Day 3 pitted the wildcard Seneca Sting from the OCAA against the ACAC champs, the Red Deer Queens.

The teams were evenly matched, with both exchanging opportunities from distance, but none overtly dangerous as the keepers from both squads were able to easily handle the attempts.

With the threat of rains oncoming, and the lack of any scoring, the possibility of another game being decided by penalties seemed unavoidable until the 70th minute, when the deadlock was broken. Seneca's Olivia Lamacchia, tucked away a ball sent in through the box at close range. With goals so hard to come by, Seneca locked things down and held for the win, punching their ticket to play in the bronze medal game, and a rematch against VIU.

Faythe Hoyte was named the 4-Imprint Player of the Game for the Seneca, while Alisha Coules received the honor for Red Deer.

CCAA Semi-Final: *Champlain Cavaliers 0, Humber Hawks 0 (*4-3 PK)

In the first semi-final matchup, hosts the Champlain Cavaliers took on the OCAA champion Humber Hawks. The game was a tale of two halves, with the Cavaliers dominating play in the first stanza. The Cavaliers had numerous chances in close but were unable to seal the deal and find the back of the net.

As if a switch were flipped after 45 minutes, it was the Hawks that dominated play in the second half, with Humber putting the Cavaliers on their heels. The OCAA's champions raised their level of play, creating a few serious scoring opportunities, but the Cavaliers' defence prevailed. Both teams held their lines and nd the game ended 0-0 in regulation.

After exchanging missed shots, saves by both teams, it was tied 3-3 after the first five shooters. With the sixth Humber shoot missing the net high, it came down to a Victoria Dupont, who buried her shot and propelled the Cavaliers to their fourth CCAA gold medal game in five years, and their first ever gold medal match on home turf. The Hawks will look to push through the bronze semi-finals on Friday for a chance to play for hardware in Saturday's bronze final.

Isabella Fiorono from Humber and Rosalie Stabile from the Cavaliers, both teams' keepers, were named the 4-Imprint Players of the Game.

CCAA Semi-Final: Aigles d'Ahuntsic 3, Seneca Sting 0

The last game of Day 2 between RSEQ Champions les Aigles d'Ahuntsic and the OCAA wildcard Seneca Sting would determine who would be going for gold against the Cavaliers on Saturday.

After a scoreless first-half that saw both teams play with some caution, Ahuntsic broke through Seneca's tight defence and took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute with a goal by Sarah-Eve Bélanger.

Ahuntsic capitalized on their goal and increased their offensive tempo, adding to their lead with a goal off a cross that was headed to the far corner, where Seneca's goalkeeper made a tremendous save, only for it to be tapped home by Alexie Bellrose in the 69th minute.

Les Aigles scored their third goal, sealing the deal and punching their ticket to the gold medal game for the first time since 2016. Ahuntsic will now meet provincial rival and hosts Champlain Saint-Lambert in the gold medal game on Saturday, while Seneca will go up against Red Deer for a chance to make it to the bronze final.

Since 2010, a team from Quebec has been in every CCAA gold medal game, and it is the fourth time since 2016 that both teams vying for gold have been from the RSEQ.

Courtney Airhiavbere was name the 4-Imprint Player of the Game for the Seneca, while Jeanne Even received the honor for Ahuntsic.

CCAA Quarter-Final: Humber Hawks 3, Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface 0

In the opening matchup of the 2022 CCAA Women's Soccer Championship, the OCAA Humber Hawks won 3-0 over Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface from the MCAC.

The Hawks opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute when midfielder Antonia Gatti sent in a long-distance shot at goal that the Saint-Boniface goalkeeper managed to get a hand on, but not keep out of her goal. The MCAC champs held off Humber's relentless attack to close out the half and start the second but Emily Robitaille found the back of the net in the 51st minute to give the Hawks the 2-0 lead. Humber secured their lead and iced the game in the 73rd, with another long-range drive at goal, this time from striker Catarina Medeiros.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were Mylène Chabot from les Rouges and Vanessa Reda from the Hawks.

CCAA Quarter-Final: Seneca Sting 2, VIU Mariners 0

As the sun set over the city skyline, the Seneca Sting from the OCAA and PACWEST's VIU Mariners, kicked off in the final match of the day.

The game got off to a torrid start as both teams looked to punch their ticket into the semi-finals. Vancouver Island University pressed Seneca early and boxed them in their zone for large parts of the first half. Seneca's athletic backline and goalkeeper thwarted all chances and kept the score at 0-0 to end the first half.

In the 46th minute, Shanice Alfred scored for Seneca off a scramble in front of the VIU goal, giving the Sting a 1-0 lead. After an exchange of opportunities by both sides, Seneca padded its lead with a second goal, putting the game away in the 85th with a marker from Olivia Lamacchia off of a corner kick. Seneca held on for the clean sheet and the 2-0 win.

CCAA Player of the Year Cara Dunlop was named the 4-Imprint Player of the Game for the Mariners, while Lamacchia received the honor for the Seneca Sting.
