Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball found themselves on the brink of a loss, but came together as a team late to defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield 3-2 (25-12, 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14).

The match started off strong for the Mountaineers, cruising to an easy first set win. Cambrian was able to settle in after that to win sets two and three. It wasn't until the fourth set that Mohawk's strong team play from the first set returned, and continued into the fifth set.

Both Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) and Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO) played tremendous volleyball with their attack. Team defence was also a plus for the Mountaineers.

Head coach Kelsey Kovar complimented here teams fight.

"Today's game was a battle, I think Cambrian is a very talented team," Kovar said. "I'm proud of my players for being gritty, resilient and for battling back when things were not necessarily going our way. We battled and came out with the win."

With a record back over the .500 mark, the Mountaineers will be eyeing for similar play moving forward.

"I think we just need to work on the consistency of some of our skillset," Kovar said. "We just need to clean some things and get more consistency for the next games."

The Mountaineers are back on the road as they head to play the Humber Hawks on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
