Fanshawe Softball Opens Season with Win over Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – On Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field, the Fanshawe Falcons celebrated the return of OCAA softball with an 11-1 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers.

The Falcons came out flying with lead off singles from Paige Askew (London, ON) and Katie Berg (Stratford, ON). A 2-RBI triple from rookie Marandee Hunter (Chatham, ON) got Fanshawe on the board, then Jenna Mclean (Watford, ON) followed that with a triple of her own to put the home team up 3-0 at the end of the opening inning. Fanshawe continued to bring the heat in the second frame, with RBIs from Berg and Kennedi Roth (Stratford, ON). Mclean added another big hit to make the score 7-0 for the red and white after two innings. Roth hit a pair of triples to conclude the game after six innings, 11-1. Morgan Lowry (Middlesex-Centre) (1-0) had an incredible game for the Falcons, recording 11 strikeouts as the winning pitcher. Kerri Smith (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Mohawk. Hunter led the home team offensively with 4 RBIs, 3 hits, 2 runs and a stolen base. Roth and Berg both added 2 RBIs and 2 runs.

Later in the day, the Falcons dropped a game to the reigning OCAA Champion Humber Hawks (1-2) by a score of 3-1. With strong pitching by both sides, Humber held a slim 2-0 lead going into the fifth inning. Unfortunately, the Hawks would hold on and go on to win 3-1. Despite recording 6 strikeouts, Julia Smith (London, ON) (0-1) took the loss for the Falcons and Humber's Meagan Muir (1-1) was the winning pitcher.

The Falcons (1-1) will take Alumni Field again on Sunday, September 19 when they host the Durham Lords at 12:30pm, followed by Seneca at 2:30pm at Alumni Field.
