Women’s Basketball Lose 66-62 to Mohawk

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team fell 66-62 to Mohawk College (Hamilton) Sunday afternoon at the SportsPlex and now hold a 1-2 record in the OCAA's West Division.

A bad shooting night for the Saints started early as Mohawk pulled ahead 19-9 after the first quarter.  St. Clair had their best effort in the second quarter and righted the ship but still trailed 34-28 at the intermission.  The Saints continued to cut into the deficit and tied the game (44-44) with 2:35 to play in the third quarter but Mohawk remained in front 48-46 heading to the final frame.  St. Clair tied the game mid-way through the fourth and again with just over two minutes to play but each time Mohawk answered to create the final cushion.

Even though St. Clair was +25 in shot attempts they only converted 21% and allowed Mohawk to gain their first win of the season.  Mohawk outscored the Saints 31-0 in bench production and 32-16 in points around the basket which were also key statistical differences.

Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) led the Saints with a game high 22 points to go with 8 rebounds and 4 steals.  Lauren Overeem (Brantford, ON) recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points while Janae Smith (Warren, MI) had a nice overall game with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.

Tia Stys (St. Catharines, ON) had a double-double scoring 10 points and clearing 10 rebounds for Mohawk in the win with teammate Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) also chipping in with 10 points.

The Saints continue their OCAA West schedule with road games at Humber College (Etobicoke) on Saturday and Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday.
