The Mountaineers women's basketball team overpowered the Sheridan Bruins 61-34 on the road. It is the second time Mohawk has defeated Sheridan in the last nine days, and the fourth victory over the Bruins dating back to preseason play.

A huge third quarter sealed the game for the Mountaineers when they shot nearly 48 per cent from the field for 23 points.

Mohawk held Sheridan to 10 or less points in all four quarters, and the 27 point win is the largest margin of victory for the Mountaineers so far this season.

"Defensively we were extremely active," head coach Hali Burns said. "We closed gaps to prevent penetration. We played as a unit and played great team defence."

The Mountaineers held the Bruins to 19.7 per cent shooting for the game. Mohawk shot 33.8 per cent while scoring 16 points off 18 turnovers and outscored Sheridan 36-16 in the paint.

"This game was definitely a confidence booster," Burns said. "We will continue to build on the positives going forward."

First-year forward Celina Chung (Oakville, ON) fell one point shy of her second consecutive double-double with nine points and a career-high 18 rebounds.

Tianna Stys (St. Catharines, ON) led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points and added eight rebounds.

This game marked the halfway point of the season for the Mountaineers, who are now 2-2 through four games.

Mohawk will next play on the road on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. when they travel to London to take on the Fanshawe Falcons (1-4).
