OSHAWA, ON - In a matchup of OCAA contenders, the Durham College women's softball team fell just short in a 4-0 loss to the visiting Humber Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Durham Field.
A defensive stalemate through a majority of the game, Lords starting pitcher
Morgan Salter (Battersea, ON) and Hawks pitcher Meagan Muir combined for 13 strikeouts and just eight hits allowed. A 0-0 contest through the first four innings, Humber broke the deadlock in the fourth with a single run, before a pair of sixth inning errors allowed the Hawks to extend the lead and secure the win.
Durham will have time to prepare for their next game, welcoming the Fanshawe Falcons to Durham Field at the end of the week on Friday, Oct. 1. First pitch for the Friday night doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m.
• Durham were limited in the pitching showcase with
Nicole Mancini (Toronto, ON) and
Abi Suffel (Whitby, ON) registering the only two hits for DC.
• Still finding a way to get on base, first-year outfielder
Kaysa Melin (Surrey, BC) added two walks for the Lords from the DH position.
• Michaela Tuck and Jorja Berney picked up an RBI each for the Hawks in the win.
• Last week's Durham College female athlete of the week Salter delivered another solid performance against a top tier opponent, pitching a complete seven innings with six strikeouts, while walking three and allowing six hits with two earned runs.
• Earning the win for the Hawks, Muir also went the full seven innings, recording eight strikeouts, while conceding four walks and two hits to DC.
