Falcons Drop Match Against Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – On Tuesday evening, the Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (0-6) lost to the Mohawk Mountaineers (5-2) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

To begin the match, the Mountaineers went up 2-0, but the Birds answered, going on a 4-1 run which included kills from Charlee Akehurst (Kitchener, ON), Sammie Gibson (London, ON) and Hanna Onyema (St. Thomas, ON). To tie things up at seven, Taryn Elgersma (London, ON) received a tough serve from the visitors and got the ball up to setter Ally Taylor (Regina, SK) who scored off a beautiful setter-dump for the Birds. To give the Falcons an advantage of 18-16, Onyema recorded a sweet kill and followed up with a block on consecutive plays. As the set continued, the visitors found their stride and won 25-21.

Fanshawe was down early in set two. With great determination, Gibson and Onyema smashed kills that were set by Taylor. Down 14-7, Ari Peake (London, ON) came up big and scored for the Falcons to keep them alive. The Birds closed in on the visitor's lead but came up short and fell 25-16 in the second set.

To start the third, the Falcons and Mountaineers traded points. Second-year Grace McLean (Dorchester, ON) hit forcefully to increase Fanshawe's score, and a Peake kill pushed the Birds' lead by two. Later in the set, McLean spiked down a deadly over bump, but Mohawk regained the advantage. The visitors took set three 25-19.

The Falcons will travel to the SRC Doon Campus on Saturday to go head-to-head against the Conestoga Condors (5-1) at 6:00 p.m.
