Softball sweeps season series with Durham; Extends streak to seven

ETOBICOKE – Humber softball (9-3, 2nd OCAA) rolled to a season series sweep of the Durham Lords Wednesday evening at Connorvale Park. The Hawks rode its pitching staff during the twin bill, as both starters went the distance to earn the victories.

Hannah Koziolek reached base five times for Humber, while Hayley Pasma extended her home run streak to three straight games.

Game One: Humber 6, Durham 1

Hayley Pasma continued her hot hitting in game one, taking the first pitch she saw in the home half of the first inning deep to left field for her third home run of the season.

A tight pitcher's duel finally gave way in the fifth frame when Meagan Muir helped her own cause with an RBI single. Then Coach Bowles turned to Breanna Oliver to pinch-hit and the slugging first baseman did not disappoint. She drove the second pitch she saw back up the middle to extend Humber's lead to four.

Humber's aggressiveness on the base paths continued to put pressure on Durham's defence, and a double steal with Muir and Julie Kostuch gave Humber its fifth run of the inning.

Ace Meagan Muir was once again brilliant in the circle, firing another complete game for her third victory of the season, lowering her ERA to a sparkling 1.45

Game Two: Humber 3, Durham 2

The Lords jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning. The Hawks instantly responded in the home half of the inning, capitalizing on two defensive miscues to tie the game.

The Hawks finally ended the stalemate in the fifth inning once again, when an RBI double from Alexis Ferreira doubled to the wall in right centre field wall, scoring rookie Christina D'Angelo from second base.

Rookie Mikaela Moore went the distance in the circle, picking up her third career victory.

Humber Highlights

• In 14 innings against Durham this season, Meagan Muir is 2-0 with 10 strikeouts, while giving up zero earned runs.
• Hannah Koziolek tied teammate Alexa Vassos with 21 career stolen bases – the most in program history.
• Hayley Pasma's home run set a new career-high while tying the single-season program record.
• Muir's 1.45 ERA is the second-best mark in the conference.
• Humber is now 22-21 all-time against the Durham Lords. The Hawks swept the season series against Durham for the first time during the Coach Bowles era.

What's Next?

The Hawks will put the OCAA on hold and head to British Columbia for the 2021 CCSA National Championship, hosted by UBC-Okanagan. The three-day tournament takes place in Kelowna from Oct. 8-10, with a five-game round robin and the top four teams advancing to the medal rounds. Humber will open the tournament against St. Clair at noon EST.
