LANCERS STOP THE SURGE

LANCERS STOP THE SURGE

Playing in front of a packed crowd Tuesday night for their first home game of the season, the Lancers' women's basketball team did not disappoint.

After an evenly matched first half, the visiting St. Lawrence Surge capitalized on unforced Lancer errors and went up by 14 for their biggest lead of the game. The Lancers began to rally in the second half, executing Coach Hugh's game plan to perfection and holding two of the Surge's top scorers to only 11 points in the final quarter. With the fans acting as the 6th player, the home team went on an impressive 13-0 run to take a 71-70 lead with mere minutes left on the clock. The Surge added 3 before the Lancers went on another run and scored 10 unanswered points, including a clutch 3 from Jessyka Maliksi in the final seconds to push to a 83-73 final.

Maliksi was the leading scorer for the Lancers with 16 points while first year player Chelsea Taylor made a huge impact coming off the bench for 13 points, 9 of which came in the second half of the game

Head coach Caleb Hugh is happy to not only get the win, but to see postitive team dynamics in full effect.  "Our team demonstrated the attitude we strive for" he says. "There were many times in the game when things weren't going our way but it didn't change our competition level. Cianah Miller (aka "Whispers") said it best when when we were down 14 - "this isn't over" as she was cheering on her teammates from the bench."

The Lancers look to improve on their 1-1 record on Friday when they travel to Oshawa, ON to take on the Durham Lords at 6 PM.
