Falcons Defeated by the Hawks

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Women's Volleyball team (2-10) fell to the No. 3 Nationally ranked Humber Volleyball team (13-0) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors got off to a quick start and took an 8-3 lead over the Falcons. First-year Abby Keeler (Toronto, ON) then sparked Fanshawe with an ace and Taryn Elgersma (London, ON) followed with two terrific kills.  Fanshawe's outstanding play resulted in a 6-1 run and gave the Falcons the advantage over the visitors. After great rallies, the Hawks gained the advantage back. Down seven, Fanshawe's Grace McLean (Dorchester, ON) scored off a beautiful set from teammate Ally Taylor (Regina, SK). Ari Peake (London, ON) also added to Fanshawe's score with a huge block on a Hawks outside hitter and converted on an ace later in the set. Ultimately, the Falcons fell short, and the visitors took set one 25-18.

To start the second, McLean ran a thirty-one with Taylor to record Fanshawe's first point of the set. To tie things up at 5, Keeler made a huge block to excite the crowd. Later in the set, Ashlyn Gooder (St. Catharines, ON) served an ace and Elgersma recorded a kill on back-to-back plays. Down 10 the Falcons brought the score to 24-18 with four consecutive kills. Despite Fanshawe's efforts, they fell 25-18 in set two.

Set three began with a McLean ace and a Peake kill to give Fanshawe an early lead. The Falcons held their advantage as Gooder converted on two aces and Taylor recorded a kill. Later in the set, the momentum shifted in the Hawks' favour and the visitors took the lead. Trailing 23-16, Elgersma scored off two kills, but the visitors eventually secured the victory and set three by a score of 25-19.
