Condors outlast Mountaineers 12-8 in high scoring affair

The Mountaineers finished up their weekend in London on Sunday with an afternoon matchup against the Conestoga Condors. The Condors outlasted the Mountaineers 12-8 in a game that saw 32 total hits and eight errors between the two.

Mohawk pitcher Kerri Smith pitched all seven innings giving up 12 runs on 21 hits while striking out five batters.

Conestoga centrefielder Kennedy Schnarr opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a single that drove in two runs. Third baseman Marin Delaney hit a sacrifice fly to centre to make it 3-0 early on for the condors.

Conestoga extended their lead in the second inning with four runs on four singles and two Mohawk errors.

The bottom half of the inning saw the Mountaineers cut into their deficit with an RBI double from Olivia Thompson that drove in Michaela Walker to make it a 7-1 score. The Mountaineers continued to chip away, plating a pair of runs in the third inning with singles from Smith and Walker to make it a four-run deficit.

Conestoga's bats woke up again in the 5th inning with five hits and three runs, but the Mountaineers answered immediately in the bottom half. Smith and Emma Harker each picked up a single and came around to score in the inning.

Conestoga's Cassie Leader notched another single in the 6th inning to drive in the Condors 11th run. Mohawk responded once again in the bottom half with singles from Katie Ross and Harker, followed by a two-run single off the bat of Kacie Harrison.

The Mountaineers entered the final frame trailing the Condors 11-7.

Both teams would plate a run in the 7th inning for a 12-8 final but it was Mohawk's best played game in the early 2021 season. Mohawk's five errors seemed to be the difference on Sunday but it is was huge positive to see the bats come through with 11 hits and eight runs.

Base running was another area the Mountaineers took advantage of in this game with five stolen bases from five different players.

The Mountaineers will look for their first victory of the season on Wednesday as they host the Durham Lords in their home opener. The Lords have won four of the past five OCAA Championships and will be a tough test for the young Mountaineers team.

First pitch is at 6:00 p.m. from Mohawk Sports Park Diamond # 1 with the second game coming at 8:00 p.m.
