Mountaineers snap losing streak for first win

Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball established a lead early and were able to hold on for a 66-62 win over the St. Clair Saints.

It was the Mountaineers first win of the season after losing their first four.

Mohawk jumped out in front by 10 after the first quarter, but St. Clair continued to chip away at the lead in the second and third quarter.

With 5:14 left in the fourth the Saints took their first lead since the first quarter, but the Mountaineers quickly responded to regain a four-point advantage.

Tied late with under two minutes to go Celina Chung (Toronto, ON) gave Mohawk a 64-62 lead with a runner off the backboard. Beth Minielly (London, ON) would then seal the deal with a midrange jumper.

Tia Stys (St. Catharines, ON) picked up a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) also contributed 10 and the Mountaineers also got a combined 31-points from their bench.

Mohawk returns home for their next game on Nov. 19 when the host the Conestoga Condors for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
