Game Preview: Mountaineers women’s basketball get undefeated Hawks at home

Mountaineers vs Hawks

As the season progresses along, Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball are getting set to host the undefeated Humber Hawks on Wednesday night inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

Action begins at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on OCAA Live.

The Matchup:

The Mountaineers enter the game with a 2-7 record and have lost their last seven against the Hawks. Humber, with a 9-0 record in conference play, currently ranks third in the CCAA.

Mohawk began second half play last Saturday when they hosted the Niagara Knights, losing 60-43.

The Hawks a week ago picked up a 78-46 win over the Conestoga Condors, and currently lead the OCAA in many key team statistical categories, including points per game, field goal percentage and rebounds.

What Happened Last Time:

In a November game the Mountaineers came out on the losing end against the Hawks, 77-48. Mohawk fell behind by 19 after the opening quarter, but the first 10-minutes removed they kept it relatively close, losing the final three quarters by 10.

Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) played a good game for Mohawk, scoring seven and adding four rebounds and three steals.

Humber had three players finish in double digit scoring, led by Kayah Clarke's 22.

Who to Watch For:

Lauren Snider (Brantford, ON) is consistently the spark plug defensively for Mohawk. While her play doesn't always appear in the box score, the third-year guard does the little things defensively, including drawing charges. Her energy defensively will be key to keeping things close against the Hawks.

As a team, the Hawks rank second in the OCAA in three-point shooting, led by Nicole Chateau and Clarke. The two rank third and fourth in the conference in three-point shooting percentage.

What's Next:

Following this game the Mountaineers will receive a week break before beginning a two-game road trip. They'll head to Kitchener, ON on Jan. 27 to play the Conestoga Condors and two days later they will be in London, ON to play the Fanshawe Falcons.
