ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team had a flair for the dramatic on Saturday in Etobicoke as they pulled out two comeback wins over the Humber Hawks to close out their regular season.
With the two victories over the Hawks winning by scores of 5-4 and 2-1, the Lords improve to 8-12 and move one step closer to clinching a spot in the OCAA championship for the third straight year.
Things looked bleak for Durham heading into the final inning of game one trailing Humber 4-0. However, the Lords' bats would come alive as they put up five runs to take a 5-4 lead. The offensive outburst was highlighted by a
Michael Chilvers (Sutton West, Ont.) three-run home run and an RBI double from pinch hitter
Ilija Bozinovski (Ajax, Ont.).
Humber would make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a hit and two walks, but
Cole Casford (Kingston, Ont.) managed to escape the inning without allowing a run to pick up the save.
All of Humber's four runs came in the bottom of the first inning, with
Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) getting the start. The lefty would rebound and shut down Humber for the next five innings, fanning six batters in the win.
Game two was a pitchers duel with Durham's
Jake Legros (Whitby, Ont.) walking away with the win. He allowed one earned run on five hits over his first career complete game. Legros relied on his defence who made no errors, as he only struck out one batter.
Chilvers and
Dylan Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored Durham's two runs in the win. Harkness crushed a home run in the fourth inning to level the score at 1-1.
Durham finishes the regular season with an 8-12 record to sit in the last playoff position. Seneca (4-12) trails by four games but have four games remaining including a doubleheader against the undefeated St. Clair Saints on Sunday.
