HUMBER 9, DURHAM 7

HUMBER 9, DURHAM 7

OSHAWA, Ont. - Young teams sometimes have a tough time closing out games. That was case for the Durham College baseball team on Sunday afternoon as they dropped both games of their doubleheader against the Humber Hawks.

After five innings of play, everything looked great for the Lords as they held a 7-3 lead with their ace Ilija Bozinovski (Ajax, Ont.) pitching strong. That's when the Hawks bats came alive as they put together a six-run sixth inning that began with four straight singles.

After the damage was done, Humber picked up the 9-7 win. The Hawks only registered eight hits but had seven free passes with Durham issuing six walks and a hit batter.

Bozinovski allowed six earned runs over five plus innings of work. Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) came into the game in relief and allowed three earned runs over two innings while striking out five.

Michael Chilvers (Sutton West, Ont.) had the hot stick at the plate going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Humber's Kenneth Hahnfeld went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.

Humber carried that momentum into game two and completely dominated the play scoring multiple runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings en route to a 9-3 victory.

The lone bright spot for Durham's pitching staff was the performance of relief pitcher Paul Zettler (Mississauga, Ont.) who allowed only one hit over 2.1 innings of work. Humber starting pitcher Andrew Blakey earned the win allowing three Durham runs in four innings.

The Lords offence failed to produce any players with a multi-hit game while Humber's Sean Mattson and Stephen Andreopoulos had two hits apiece.

Humber has won three straight games as they improve to 6-4 on the year. Durham is holding on to the final playoff position in the OCAA with a 3-5 overall record.

The Lords will be back at home on Wednesday night when they host the George Brown Huskies (1-7). Durham beat George Brown twice on the road earlier this week.
