OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 19.

All OCAA Stars of the Week will receive an acrylic bag tag courtesy of Nothers, the Preferred Awards Supplier of the OCAA.

Anthony Beijes
School: Mohawk
Program: Computer Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Hamilton, Ont.
Beijes was a standout star for the Mohawk Mountaineers in their OCAA crossover playoff match versus the Durham Lords on Feb. 18. Winning 3-0 as a team, Beijes helped lead the Mountaineers to their first OCAA championship tournament appearance since the 2016-17 season. The third-year outside hitter finished with a match-high 15 points versus the Lords on 11 kills, three blocks, three digs and a service ace. Mohawk will now make the trek to Fanshawe for the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship beginning on Thursday.

Ella Doull
School: St. Lawrence
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Doull was dominate in the final two games of the regular season for St. Lawrence, scoring 30 total points and adding nine rebounds. The rookie guard scored a game-high 19 points in a 59-49 win at George Brown on Feb. 17, then one day later, earned a Big Gulp (seven rebounds, 11 points) in a 73-47 win at Centennial. The wins were crucial in locking in a crossover home playoff game for St. Lawrence, taking place this Saturday against Conestoga. Doull finished the regular season fifth in league scoring averaging 17.4 points per game.

Taryn Mitchell
School: Niagara
Program: Occupational Therapy
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Port Colborne, Ont.
Mitchell was a key factor in a pair of Niagara victories this past weekend, including a big win over Lambton on Feb. 18. Mitchell scored a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-of-14 (50 per cent), while grabbing eight rebounds in Niagara's 64-60 victory, handing Lambton just its third loss of the regular season. The following day in Niagara's regular season finale, Mitchell shot 8-of-14 (57 per cent) including 5-of-9 (56 per cent) beyond the three-point arc for a game-high 23 points in a 74-31 win over St. Clair. Niagara hosts the OCAA championship beginning Mar. 3.

Kyle Shiferaw
School: Fleming
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
It was one last ride for Shiferaw this past week as the fifth-year guard played OCAA basketball for the final time. Shiferaw averaged 38 minutes of court time in three games with the Fleming Knights, scoring 44 total points against Seneca, Algonquin and La Cité. In back-to-back games in Ottawa this past weekend, Shiferaw shot 11-of-23 (48 per cent) beyond the three-point arc. Shiferaw went out a winner on Feb. 18, scoring 15 points, all on three-pointers, in Fleming's 100-97 win at La Cité. Shiferaw scored a career-high 192 this past season.

Katie Stewart
School: Durham
Program: International Business Management
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Gananoque, Ont.
Stewart led the Durham Lords to a win in straight sets against Fanshawe in their qualifying game on Feb. 18 to secure a spot at the 2023 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. With a match-high 18 points, Stewart was one of three Lords to hit double digits in offence. The fifth-year outside hitter finished the afternoon with 16 kills on 25 total attempts, four digs and a pair of service aces. Stewart averaged 3.3 points per set during the regular season. Stewart and the Lords will now head to Sheridan this week for a chance to win the OCAA championship.

Colin Zhou
School: Centennial
Program: Software Engineering Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: China
It was three days to remember for Zhou. The Centennial first-year badminton player was first named OCAA Player of the Year and an OCAA All-Star. Then Zhou went on to win double gold medals at the OCAA championships hosted by Seneca in Aurora, Ont., winning the men's singles crown without dropping a set, and helping Centennial win its first-ever OCAA men's team title. Zhou will now lead Team OCAA into the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton National Championships from Mar. 8-11 at Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S.
