OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 26.

All OCAA Stars of the Week will receive an acrylic bag tag courtesy of Nothers, the Preferred Awards Supplier of the OCAA.

Stephanie Armstrong
School: Humber
Program: Wellness Coaching
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Pickering, Ont.
Armstrong was named a Championship First-Team All-Star, helping lead the Humber Hawks to a national bronze medal. The fifth-year setter, playing collegiate volleyball for the final time, quarterbacking a Humber offence that went 3-1 at the competition. This included two victories over the four-time reigning national champions and host VIU Mariners. Humber's 3-1 victory in the bronze medal match ended a six year streak of national medals for VIU, including five gold. It is Humber's first national medal since 2016, which was also bronze.

Victoria Duong
School: Humber
Program: Business Accounting
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Kitchener, Ont.
Playing collegiate badminton for the final time, Duong won a third national gold medal, partnering with Airi Moromisato to win the women's doubles championship. The duo went 5-0 in the group stage (dropping just one set), then won a pair of convincing matches in the medal rounds to take the gold. Duong's two previous national championships also came in women's doubles play. Duong and Moromisato also celebrated an OCAA team supremacy award. Duong is a three-time OCAA gold and two-time silver medalist.

Jaskarn Kalsi
School: Humber
Program: Financial Services
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Rexdale, Ont.
Kalsi was named a Championship First-Team All-Star helping lead the Humber Hawks to a national silver medal. The fourth-year outside hitter contributed 28 offensive points in three matches on 22 kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces. Kalsi had a hitting percentage of 54.3 per cent on 35 total attacks. Kalsi was named Player of the Match in Humber's three-set loss to Camosun in the gold medal match, contributing eight points in a losing effort. Kalsi was named a West Division First-Team All-Star following OCAA regular season play.

Catarina Medeiros
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Indoor Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Medeiros was named Championship MVP at last week's indoor soccer provincials. Medeiros scored on a penalty kick in sudden death overtime to clinch a fourth OCAA women's title in five seasons for the Humber Hawks in a 1-0 win over Seneca. This marks the second major award for Medeiros this season having been named a West Division First-Team All-Star during the outdoor season. Medeiros and many teammates are double OCAA gold medalists in 2022-23, having led Humber to an outdoor provincial championship last October.

Engjell Qamili
School: Fanshawe
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Indoor Soccer
Hometown: London, Ont.
Qamili was named Championship MVP at last week's indoor soccer provincials, helping lead the Fanshawe Falcons to back-to-back OCAA men's titles. Qamili's stellar defensive effort, especially during the gold medal match, was important as Fanshawe and Seneca played to a scoreless draw in regulation. Fanshawe eventually won the match 1-0 on a golden goal in overtime. Qamili comes to play when the lights are brightest, having also been named a Championship All-Star during last October's outdoor provincial championship.

Colin Zhou
School: Centennial
Program: Software Engineering Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: China
Zhou is the first OCAA student-athlete since 2019 to win both the provincial and national men's singles badminton championship in the same season. Similar to last month's provincials, Zhou didn't drop a set in the competition, winning five straight in the group stage before a pair of easy victories in the medal rounds. Zhou's average set score was 21-11. Zhou is the first Centennial student-athlete to win the national men's singles championship, and helped the OCAA secure the team supremacy award for the third straight event.
