OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Sept. 24.

Ryan Carey
School: Lambton
Program: Sports & Recreation Management
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Georgetown, Ont.
Carey didn't disappoint in the right-hander's season debut this past weekend. Taking the mound for the Lambton Lions, Carey threw a total of nine innings, allowing just two runs, both of which were unearned, striking out four batters. Carey's statement performance came on Sept. 24 against the Durham Lords. In a 2-1 win for the Lions in extra innings, Carey threw an eight inning complete game, allowing just seven hits and one unearned run while striking out four. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Lions.

Jamie Chopping-Lawlor
School: Fanshawe
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Cambridge, Ont.
In two triumphs against the Centennial Colts on Sept. 23, Chopping-Lawlor racked up a home run, three hits, three runs and four RBI. The following day, the Fanshawe Falcons faced the Seneca Sting. During Game 1 of the doubleheader, Chopping-Lawlor led the Falcons to a 2-0 victory with a hit, an RBI and outstanding base play to shut out the Sting. Fanshawe's winning streak increased to five games when Chopping-Lawlor recorded a second home run of the weekend, a double and three RBI to secure the 10-7 win in Game 2.

McKenna Copley
School: St. Clair
Program: Personal Support Worker
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Dover Centre, Ont.
Copley's right arm was on full display this past weekend for the St. Clair Saints. The second-year hurler and reigning OCAA rookie of the year pitched to five wins and one save as the Saints played six games in three days. Copley allowed just five earned runs with 20 strikeouts over 22.1 innings pitched. The Saints won all six games and increased their winning streak to begin the season to 14. Combined with their 27-0 regular and post-season record in 2022, St. Clair has now won 41 straight against OCAA competition.

Shade Hansen
School: Humber
Program: Film & Media
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Etobicoke, Ont.
Hansen appeared in three games for the Humber Hawks this week, not allowing an earned run in 17.1 innings of work. The rookie racked up 29 strikeouts while only giving up two hits. In a 14-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins on Sept. 21, Hansen broke the Humber program record for strikeouts in a season, while recording the program's fourth no-hitter. Hansen currently leads the conference with a 0.17 ERA and 80 strikeouts. The Hawks are now 12-2 and cruising towards the OCAA championship which Humber hosts Oct. 19-21.

Jaiden Morgan
School: Mohawk
Program: Health, Wellness & Fitness
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Burlington, Ont.
Morgan had a legacy game on Sept. 22 when the Mohawk Mountaineers defeated the Lambton Lions 9-0. The third-year forward finished the match with five goals and two assists, scoring three times in the first half and two more times in the second before being substituted out in the 74th minute. The five goals are the most scored by a Mountaineer in a single match since the 2011 season. Morgan now leads the OCAA West Division in scoring with six total goals. The Mountaineers are 4-1 at the halfway mark of the season.

Joshua Vivero
School: Cambrian
Program: Social Service Worker
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Vivero was integral in the Cambrian Golden Shield obtaining its first team points of the season this past weekend in Toronto. In a 2-2 draw against the Seneca Sting on Sept. 23, the first-year striker scored Cambrian's first goal and assisted on another that tied the match. Against the Centennial Colts the following day, Vivero scored the game winning goal in the 89th minute giving the Golden Shield their first victory of the season. Cambrian had lost to the Colts 4-1 at home earlier in the season, making the victory that much more meaningful.
