OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 1.

Brandon Deans
School: Humber
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
In an 11-0 win over the Lambton Lions on Oct. 1, Deans gave one of more memorable performances in a Humber Hawks uniform. After inducing two groundouts to begin the game, the hard-throwing righty went on to strike out 13 consecutive batters. Deans became the program's all-time leader in strikeouts and threw the second perfect game in Humber history, joining James Byrnes in 2014. The victory increased Humber's winning streak to a league-high seven games with five regular season contests remaining.

Amar Dhindsa
School: Seneca
Program: Law Clerk
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Dhindsa helped propel the Seneca Sting to clinch a post-season berth thanks to a 1-0-1 road trip this past weekend. Facing the previously unbeaten Algonquin Wolves, the first-year goalkeeper made seven saves in a crucial 2-1 win for the Sting on Sept. 29. The following afternoon, Dhindsa made nine saves in a 2-2 draw with the St. Lawrence Surge. It was a key four-point effort for the Sting against teams ahead of them in the standings. Dhindsa has played 540 of 630 minutes through seven regular season matches.

Nick King
School: Durham
Program: Mechanical Techniques - Plumbing
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Whitby, Ont.
The second-year right-hander was the King of the Hill in the first-half of a doubleheader against the Seneca Sting on Sept. 27, tying the OCAA record for strikeouts in a single game with 16. Facing the minimum 21 batters over seven innings, King's only blemish was a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth. King struck out the side three times, striking out five consecutive batters on two occasions, as Durham Lords won the game 9-0. King currently leads all OCAA pitchers with 30 strikeouts as the regular season heads into the home stretch.

Jana Omar
School: St. Lawrence
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Rugby Sevens
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Omar led the St. Lawrence Surge in tries and points on Sept. 30 at Twin Elm Rugby Park in the National Capital Region. The second-year student-athlete scored the lone St. Lawrence try in a 12-5 loss to the host Algonquin Wolves, then followed up with two tries in a 17-5 win over the Loyalist Lancers and another two tries in a 29-5 victory over the Fleming Phoenix. Omar now has 11 total tries on the season. Omar's efforts helped propel the Surge to second place in the OCAA standings with one weekend competition to go before the championship.

Katie Rice
School: Fanshawe
Program: Protection, Security & Investigation
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Cross Country
Hometown: Ingersoll, Ont.
During the 26th annual Fanshawe College Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 30 in London, Rice won the women's six kilometre race with a pace of 4:04/km. The defending OCAA champion finished with a time of 24:24, beating the second-place finisher by one minute and 11 seconds. Rice has now won four straight OCAA competitions dating back to last season, including the 2022 OCAA championship. Rice will look to keep the wins coming later this month at the Centennial Invitational in Scarborough.

Abbey Schnarr
School: Conestoga
Program: Community & Criminal Justice
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Kitchener, Ont.
The Conestoga Condors have had a tough OCAA regular season sitting at the bottom the standings, but one bright spot is the play of Schnarr. The first-year middle infielder went 6-for-10 in a pair of doubleheaders against the Humber Hawks and Fanshawe Falcons this past week, reaching base eight times in a dozen plate appearances. In addition to a .600 batting average and .667 on base percentage, Schnarr contributed three RBI, a pair of runs and four stolen bases over four games and now has a five-game hitting streak.
