OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 8.

Jordan Blades-McHenry
School: Algonquin
Program: Fitness & Health Promotions
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
After a standout first-season with the Algonquin Wolves, Blades-McHenry was sidelined for the early part of the 2023 season recovering from a broken ankle suffered last March. The reigning OCAA Rookie of the Year has been back on the pitch for a few weeks now and Blades-McHenry seems back in the groove, scoring a hat trick en route to a 7-0 win over the Loyalist Lancers on Oct. 6. This is a great sign for the Wolves with one game remaining in the regular season before playing for keeps in the OCAA playoffs beginning Oct. 18.

Mark Do Coito
School: George Brown
Program: Social Service Worker
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Do Coito logged three goals on five shots on goal in an 8-0 win over the Cambrian Golden Shield on Oct. 7 as the George Brown Huskies remained perfect at 8-0, maintaining their nearly season-long No. 1 ranking in the OCAA. Do Coito's offensive contributions helped the Huskies to break the OCAA single season scoring record with 57 goals on the season with two games still left to go. Do Coito's seven regular season goals is ranked eighth among all OCAA players. The Huskies take on the Durham Lords at home on Thursday.

River Johnston
School: Seneca
Program: Flight Services
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: North York, Ont.
River was exceptional in helping the Seneca Sting to a 2-2 record this past week. River went 10-for-15 at the plate over the four games, driving in six runs and scoring six more times. River's week was highlighted in a doubleheader sweep against the Mohawk Mountaineers where the second-year player went 6-for-8 with three RBI and five runs scored. In the field, River had five putouts and 11 assists for the week. River is currently in the Top 10 in OCAA batting with a .403 average as the Sting remain in the hunt for a OCAA championship berth.

Ben Landers
School: Fanshawe
Program: Business Insurance
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Delaware, Ont.
Landers recorded a pair of sub-par rounds at the OCAA Golf Championships to claim the men's individual gold medal last week at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor. The runner-up at the 2022 provincials, Landers began the three-day 54-hole event shooting an even-par 71 and followed this up by posting a tournament-low round of 67. Landers closed with a round of 69 to win the competition by four strokes. The now two-time OCAA individual medalist recorded nine birdies and an eagle compared to just five bogies during the competition.

Hayley McCallum
School: Humber
Program: General Arts & Science
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
McCallum made history at the OCAA Golf Championships, becoming the first person to win five OCAA individual medals at the event. The reigning national champion began the final round at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor with a two-shot lead and fired a one-under 70 to win by 13 strokes. McCallum also became the first person to win three OCAA individual women's gold medals to go along with a pair of silver medals. McCallum was a key factor in the Humber Hawks winning their fourth straight women's team championship.

Garret Oldejans
School: Redeemer
Program: Kinesiology
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Dundas, Ont.
Oldejans had a career game against the Niagara Knights on Oct. 7 with a career-high three goals. The third-year midfielder put the Redeemer Royals on the board 9:42 into the opening half, and less than two minutes later, Oldejans would strike again to put the Royals up 2-0. Oldejans would close out the hat trick at 13:26 of the opening half, registering three goals in a span of three minutes and 44 seconds, a new Redeemer record. The Royals went on to win the match 6-2. Oldejans now has a team leading five goals on the season.
